200 SMRT bus drivers refuse to go to work over pay issue

Reports were one-sided. All the attention on the PRCs drivers only, what about the mgmt of SMRT? As reported, the drivers have informed them and nothing happens. So I believe the strike was the last resort.

Very typical of HR dept. Tell them, feedback to them and no response. Singaporeans will just accept and life carries on. These PRCs went one step ahead.

reported in the stress times that the smrt ceo desperate quack was saying they have been ‘engaging’ the bus drivers for months ! it is precisely because they have been engaging for months and there is no outcome that the drivers resorted to desperate measure


if it is something which has just started to discuss, then the management could possibly argue they are surprised by an unjustified strike

after months of discussion why should the management be surprised ?

the smrt management simply was not working at all

they must not give in else every day some drivers will make some demands and there will be no end to it

be firm BUT be reasonable, else there is no moral authority to be firm

Yes, China is upcoming...but their citizens have to understand and agree what they have signed before coming.

It's very similar to the maids we had back then. Mum drafted out a contract to maids before they arrived from Philippines...for eg, 1st condition was she had to wash THE car. 2nd condition was no advance pay. After they came, they compared notes with neighbour. Neighbour's maid doesn't have to wash family car and our maid then complained. Then one month into working, they asked for 1 month advance pay to pay off the agent back home.
When mum asked her whether she read contract before signing it hurriedly...maids' faces turned black and they started to play punk like not waking up at 6 and refusing to work...exactly like these China drivers.

When I first started working, my boss told me that there are no barriers to exit and no one is indispensible. Subsequent ones also believe in the same. :boogie: :boogie:

It's not appropriate to make comparition in this case. Those 3 islands in dispute indeed belong to China, until after The War and US conveniently \"awarded\" the islands to Japan and subsequently being sold to private entity, and now sold back to Japan gov. It's a sovereignty issue. Every nation has it's right to defend their pride. In this case, China had been bullied for centuries.

Korea and Taiwan too, are engaging with Japan for similar dispute.

smrt workers dispute is a labour dispute, poor HR management issue, the workers resorted to their regrettable disruptive action that's not acceptable in SG. It should be view as it is; both China and SG netizens should only focus on the issue; and, nothing else.

Just my 2 cents.
