HCI done the right thing to kick him out of their school early in his career, however, the RV alumni sitting in the board must certainly be all sleeping and let this guy trash the good name of the school.

The alumni of a government school unlike independent school has no admin power to negotiate with MOE for a principal candidate. That is one of the shortcoming of a government school.

HCI managed to discontinue his contract because an opportunity arised due to implementation of IP...no school will veto MOE under normal circumstances.

The new P has a tough job to do. I am looking forward to a better year for RV under her leadership.

Wonder if there'll be any changes to the iPAD programme. As a parent, I am against the programme. It has caused more harm than benefits to my child, and created more work for me. Just wonder how many parents out there having problems managing their children on the proper use of iPAD? :frustrated:[/quote]MXYMum,
Participating (i.e. to hold ownership) in the IPad programme is an option, the school had some units of IPad for loan and use during the lessons.

If your kid lacks the self-discipline in the use of the IPad, it's of utmost priority as parents to institute strict usage protocol of the mobile technology. Else, you should have opt out of the IPad 1:1 programme and loan the unit for use in school as mentioned by the former principal.

All programme and workplan instituted by the school would not be successful without the unyielding support of both parents and students.

      A thinker for thoughts.

Hi Poet2010, Thanks for your reply. From my understanding, the iPAD units for loan are limited and tailored for those with financial difficulties. Moreover, the students are to bring their iPAD home as assignments and notes are loaded online. For some classes, students were to complete assignments using iPAD and send them to teachers. If parents opt out, the kids may have problems accessing the teaching materials and completing their homework. So do we parents really have a choice??

As raised by many parents during the discussion with P, not all pupils are so disciplined that they use their iPAD solely for learning purposes. Just pick out a few iPAD randomly from any student, browse through the apps installed on their iPAD, and you will know what I mean. While using their iPAD during their 'learning', they also get distracted by other 'fun' apps on iPAD. Kids also use them to chat all the time. They have class IDs for i-message and I see their iPAD constantly bombarded with messages from fellow classmates.

My kid is one with poor discipline, but I know there are many facing similar issues. I have spoken to other parents and they share similar sentiments. :frustrated:

MXYMum, Mr Koh's English also so so. Seems that Koh and current P are Chinese pai while Miss Eek (before Mr Koh) is angmo pie. I personally prefer Chinese pai. 🙂

Well, it's just comments from the kids. Personally, I prefer Chinese pai too, especially since RV is a SAP school. Many older Chinese pai write better than they speak. Haa! Maybe she should just speak to the kids in Chinese. 😉

              I have a suggestion.

The school need to come out with an objective comparative study of the students’ academic result before and after implementating ipad.

It seems that the 2012 sec 1 batch’s result is not as good as the 2011 sec 1 batch. Could it be the adverse effect of ipad?

Is there any proof that results decreased after iPad implementation? There may not be an obvious improvement but there’s no decrease either. Being a student myself i can confidently say that the iPad has not resulted in weaker results. Not all students game. In my class, I don’t recall anyone using the iPad for illegitimate purposes ever since school started.

I’m not defending the iPad program because I’m a student. In fact after the iPad was introduced, I basically put all my notes into google drive, which is synced with my gmail, which is synced with my phone and computer yada yada yada, which means I don’t have to take out annoying notebooks all the time to do revision. And if a friend requires notes, or I lost mine, I just share the doc… Takes 5 seconds and its done.

IMO, if the child ends up using the iPad as a gaming/networking tool, then his results will reflect. There will be people who will learn it the hard way at the end of the year. I’ve personally been through it, and I think that’s a more than enough way to make one reflect on himself. Furthermore, since all RV students are expected to be of good character… Theoretically, this problem shouldn’t even exist, no?

concernedparent999, if this is a big issue, give your feedback to the new p. Get her to talk to the child . i just feel that using ipad or laptop has its pros and cons. we have to teach our child to be responsible and discipline of his or her own doing. Give some positive suggestions!

its voice down to self discipline of DC, as its hard for parent to police the DC at all times.

Every initiative must have an objective.

Is there a well defined objective for ipad program?

                        ===

Off from my head, I can see how ipad can be used to make lessons more engaging. Teachers can test instantly in class to gauge if the students have understood certain section of the topics. The gauge questions can be send to the ipad of each students and they are expected to revert the answers immediately. Sleeping students will be exposed and the teachers can get a real time feel of the progress of each students in their understanding.
