All About A Levels
-
Hello. I have just received my Olevel results and there are many questions I would like to ask. My results are as follows: Pure Geog and German B4, Chem and Physics B3, Eng and Amath and Hcl and cl and combined humans A2, emath A1. Results are a disappointment:(
i got raw score 12, net score 8. I have been wanting to go to acjc arts stream but acjc arts stream COP is 7. If I try applying for acjc arts stream, would I stand any chance? Or isit not worth applying at all.
If I appeal will I stand a chance?
With my net score 8, would I be able to get into ajc science stream? or is it very risky to put it as my first choice? I got an A1 for emath and A2 for Amath and have a great interest for math so I hope the challenging math won’t be a problem.
Many of my friends around me are troubled about choosing between ajc and nyjc. Which do you recommend? What attracts me about nyjc is their hybrid choices…
I would be grateful if someone replies soon And Thank you! -
Hi i am fixed as to whether i should head for AJC or NYJC.
Results:
English:B3
Combined Humanities:B4
Geography:A1
Emaths:A1
Amaths:A1
Physics:A2
Chemistry:A2
Chinese:B3
Raw score:10
Cca points:2 bonus pts
Affiliation:NYJC 2 bonus pts
I am interested in the science course and i heard that even if you meet AJC’s cop of 8 for science course, they MIGHT still reject you. Should i risk it or should i go NYJC? AJC tends to produce better results and their teachers really prepares you well from what i have heard.
Also, i am interested in a scholarship after JC. If i were to go AJC and the demand for my desired subject combination is too much, will they look at your net score or will they look at your individual o level grades and see if you are eligible for the H2 subject and try to slot you into a class? I would like to take H2 PCME.
Thanks in advance for your help~ -
Same here… i am stuck between ajc and nyjc too:(

Hi! I’m currently a j2 in acjc. I was not from an affiliated school but fitted in well. However it’s advisable to have a friend from the same sec school gg together as in the beginning everyone kind of stays with their school ppl. But after awhile everyone knows everyone and all is well. Culture in ac: WE ARE NOT SNOBBISH RICH KIDS WHO SAIL THROUGH LIFE. Many come from middle income families and I have friends staying in HDBs. Of course there are also the obscenely rich ones but no one flaunts their wealth around sch. We are a family in ac with passionate teachers who know how to have a little fun (encourages us to stand on chairs during special assemblies ie. national day song singing etc). Unfortunately it is true that most speak English in ac. Rarely does one hear chinese being spoken. We don’t play play all the time. We are closet muggers and many do stay in school till evening when exams are near. Science faculty: physics dept sucks. Honestly. Bio dept is good. Head of bio is a strict no nonsense lady who makes us answer bio questions at the door of the lecture hall if we’re late for 5 or more mins. Overall ac is a great place to be with a perfect mixture of play and study! Come to ac!

I think it’s highly unlikely for u to enter acjc with 8 points as the 6 7 in the jc cut off point is a partial L1R5. Thus some ppl who score 7 might not even be able to enter ac if ppl who do better choose ac. These are the ppl who will appeal I guess. I’m from ac and my principal shared with us that last yr 500+ ppl appealed for like a handful of empty spaces. So unless u have something ac wants, maybe u should try acjc or nyjc. Heard nyjc is not bad…

My daughter has been already intereseted in ACJC due to peer group feedback and preferences. It is us parents who are more academically inclined and want more for the kids.
I am impressed with the feedback provided by you all. It seems ACJC has got more bad name than it really deserve and plus points are getting buried.
It was good to note from one of you that thought you choose TJC due to East location you still regard ACJC as a nice pick with score of 6.
Thanks. We will finalize ACJC as first choice since distance is anyway a big factor.
Since ACJC should be partial 6 it is not a sure shot for her as we are PR and may get to balloting in case of tie amongst 6 pointers. I am keeping TJC as backup followed by AJC.
Thanks, -
My dd obtained a net score of 10 pts at ‘O’ level. She wishes to try applying for MJC or NYJC. Should she put MJC or NYJC as 1st choice to get a better chance of getting into the jc? What is yr view of Tampines jc?

Can anyone advise me which JC is good between St Andrew and Nanyang JC? My son O level result is 9 points & he is choosing between this two JC ?And what other good JC that he can choose?
:thankyou: Many thanks for help. -
Hello
I recently received my O'level results:
Raw L1R5 - 10
Nett L1R5 - 6
English A2
Combined humanities B4
Math A1
Amath A1
Chemistry A1
Biology A1
Physics A2
Higher Chinese A2
Currently I'm in a major dilemma as to whether I should put TJC or MJC as my first choiceMJC seems more fun and exciting than TJC judging from their open house and the CCAs at MJC are more interesting. But many people are telling me to go to TJC because of their reputation..
What should I choose? -

Hi, thanks for sharing :). I'll probably be entering NJC! I live in Serangoon area, it's not very near njc but neither is it near VJC (which was my other consideration). Look forward to starting school there
btw, where do you live?
jessting, I think you should just place RJC as first choice & hope for the best when you appeal, over HC based on distance alone - I think both schools are more or less equally matched academic wise. As for your other choices/ safety net, I think you could consider VJC, TJC, NJC, ACJC, etc etc, or ACSIB. Should be able to get into most without any problems. All the best! -
Good luck to your RJC choice. Do not feel sad if you have to come to our school (NJC), there are nice teachers and students there.

Hi all! Am new here. Submitted my choices for JCs yesterday, but I would like to know how likely it would be that I will get into my first choice.
My results for O levels:
English A2
HCL B3
SS/Hist Elect: A2
Geography: A1
EMaths: A1
AMaths: A1
Chemistry: A1
Physics: A2
CCA: A1
L1R5=7, Net=3
I have put Hwa Chong as my first choice as I really like the environment there. Oh, and if I'm not able to get in, is it possible to appeal through my CCA Chinese Orchestra? We've gotten Gold with Honours for the last SYF. Thanks so much. -
Both JCs are good, although TJC has a much longer history than MJC. But personally, I would choose TJC.
If you are seriously undecided, choose the JC that is nearer to your house.
Congratulations on your excellent O levels science results! -
Pardon me, but may I ask how you arrived at your calculation of L1R5 of 7? Thought that CCA can only be taken as a bonus point but not as a relevant subject for admission to JC?
-
Eng + EMath + Chem + Chinese (A1, forgot to include sorry :X) + Geography + AMath
Yes, the CCA point is used as a bonus point. -
All the best to your posting results! :rahrah:

You mentioned commuting from Orchard Plaza to TJC in an earlier post... You will pass Parkway &/or Katong - areas littered with tuition centres.
okay noted, i will join clubs and societies hahas. im seriously nervous about it because i feel sleepy in sec school at 10am lol. i usually sleep at 12am and wake at 5am because my sec school is also 1hour awayInterestinggg:
Honestly speaking, coming from a student (myself) who has just recently graduated from a junior college, such commutes during peak hours are common. Of course, initially, it was hard to get used to such long school hours, waking up at 5.30am to take public transport to school (2 buses + 1 mrt + walking for one way) which could last between 50min to 85min depending on how fast the buses arrive or the jam along bukit timah roads and central area (near to where I stay. Just like you). By the time my school lessons ended, it was already 4.30pm. Following that, there were CCAs which could easily last till maybe 7pm or even 10pm depending on the type of CCA you choose (sports, performing arts and council are more rigorous compared to clubs and societies). But over the weeks you'll get used to such a life. It's only for 2 years anyway. This might sound harsh but seriously and honestly, just suck it up. Every student faces the same problems and stress and whatever strains. I usually take advantage of the break times in between lessons to catch up on my studies or homework. Weekends are especially precious. JC is pretty different from secondary school which is pretty lax if you ask me. But you'll get used to it. Feeling sleepy around 3.30pm is common, trust me! All of us fight back the urge to nod off. (Bring some sweets to keep you awake!)
All the best to you! And my additional advice is: don't grumble and whine about it, it'll only make you more miserable. Make full use of this experience: it's a once in a lifetime experience that will be very fulfilling at the end of the dayand there's no tuition center near tjc or my hse so im kind of at a loss about that too, since it has to be near to either one or it would be super rush for me. fulfilling or not will depend on my results lol
