Wow, such fervent discussions on transport in the earlier posts, missed all the excitement and now read until dizzy. Since we are at the topic of transport, is it a substantial amount for a whole family’s transport expenditure to be around $500/mth (excluding taxi fares) for a family of gross household income of about $5000? I mention gross, that means CPF not deducted yet. Your thoughts?

            Irrelevant:
            goldenvoice:

I used to stay in Blk.194, Rivervale Drive until I was forced to sell my flat by the HDB somewhere in 2009. Initially, I was in arrear of 3-4 months on the payment of my HDB loans. When they kept sending reminders, left with no other choice, we sought help from our ex-MP, Michael Palmer.
Long story short, HDB wrote to tell us that they will arrange some kind of installment payment for us which we thought was something to cheer about. Sadly enough, our joy was short-lived. We were 'chased' once again by the HDB on our arrears. I can still remember very vividly, on one occasion when I received a call from the HDB officer, an Indian lady, when she raised her voice over the phone. Feeling frustrated with her attitude, I shouted back at her. That's the kind of treatment you get when you owe them money.

First of all, I will admit to voting for the opposition in all the elections that were not walkovers.

Why am I sceptical that goldenvoice (\"GV\") is not telling us the full story?

            a. There is no mention of when GV started to be in arrears. Is it 2009, 2008, 2005 or even earlier? In other words, was it a one-off incident or a sustained default?
            b. What is wrong with HDB sending reminders? You mean you expect them to keep quiet for 6 months?
            c. Did GV infringe other HDB rules, e.g. renting out rooms with permission, etc?
            d. Why is there a need to mention race of the lady? What kind of feelings is GV trying to incite?
            e. The HDB that I know is always friendly and very reasonable. As HDB are not measured on their bottomline, they have no profit incentive. Unlike a financial institution, taking back a HDB flat would hardly enhance anybody's (in HDB) KPI. Only persistent default or infringement of HDB rules will cause one's flat to be re-possessed.

Incidentally, even when a person is adjudged a bankrupt, his creditors cannot force a HDB owner to sell the flat to satisfy outstanding debts.....

I feel the same, but didn't want to be the first to say so.

Ha Ha. I'm happy to play the bad cop. The testimony of the plaintiff has too many weaknesses....

On another note, do you reckon that the lightning guys might move to a system of proportional representation in future, instead of the current first pass the post electoral system? I think it might be possible within 2-3 GEs.

                    Mdm Koh:

When I heard the part about the pig farms and kampongs, I wondered whether the former pig farmers and kampong dwellers felt offended that their old homes were being referred to in such a negative way. There is no problem with being a pig farmer or living in a kampong, right? :skeptical:

I believe he meant to say that PAP was responsible for urbanising the area, and perhaps improving hygiene standards and providing more facilities for the new residents. However, the way he put it was very snobbish, imho. I wanted to tell him that if it weren't for pig farmers, we would have no pork to eat. :spank:
It isn't a coincidence that Hougang SMC is an opposition ward. Many of the x-pig farmers were forced to move into HDBs to be inlined with the national development plans. They were told that Singapore was over-populated, that the country has shortage of land to house the huge population. (See the irony now? They are still increasing the population size till today!)

Pleads fell to deaf ears. They brushed you aside, gave you cold shoulders - \"PEASANTS\" are people without power and status in society, yet the peasants in Singapore provided the food source that we never had to rely so heavily on. Peasants make an honest living, they are hardworking people, they don't mind getting their hands dirty, their needs are simple, they don't crave for materialism so much. They are self-sufficient in many ways, bearing many children to help out in the farms, growing their own food supply and supplying to others as well. But that's not what the garmens want. Garmens want you to rely on them, to want to buy things, to boost GDP, to make everyone spend. That's how they make the economy grow. This is the same in most developed countries, and hence we all share the same problems!! This is not a local issue, and it is not a national issue. This is a global issue!

If you were to talk to any pig farmers, they will feel sore about it, but they trusted that the garmen had better plans that would help them benefit EVERY SINGAPOREAN. So here we go: IT IS SINGAPOREANS WHO MADE OUR SUCCESS POSSIBLE! The peasants do feel proud that Singapore has achieved such a great success. But if you were to ask them of their memories of Punggol, they will tell you what our dear \"Son of Punggol\" have told you - and much more, not 'dirt roads' like what PM said.

Sorry, ah, just responding to Mdm koh's comments, not canvasing for votes - I am not running for elections 😓

I'm tired of being perpetual bad cop. For someone with less than 100 posts, you've really come out swinging eh?!

Dunno about proportional representation, seems to lead to hung governments.
