The problem is Maids doesn’t want that weekly off days, and ends up we employer need to fork out more to compensate them if they don’t want to take their off days.

The main different between Sg with Taiwan/HK, if the maid not happy, she can ask for transfer or go home ANYTIME without any penalty (eventhough they have breached the contract), and employer has to buy air ticket for her! (Extra costs like agent fee, Maid Levy, ins fee, loans, food & lodging etc ALL paid by employer!)

Whereas for Taiwan/HK, if the maid want to terminate the contract prematurely, she needs to pay for her own air ticket, food & lodging, loan etc AND she will not be allowed to work in Taiwan/HK again. Heard that maids over there need to pay for rental while working in Taiwan/HK, not sure if this is true. And Taiwan/HK has NO Maid Levy!

Those maids really treat Sg as stepping stone now, let’s face it! That’s why we have so many maid ‘suka-suka’ come and go WITHOUT any penalty! I believe SG govt can do alot more than this!

I really think that Maid is not a luxury now, especially for those who has children or elderly at home to take care of.

You are the boss, you are expected to work harder than the employee. I can’t say, how come my secretary can take the day off but I must stay back weekends to prepare for conference, can I?

          tanya:
Thats why I hate Halimah to the core

Same here!! i think she tried to make bold moves to impress govt, at the expense of us, employers!!
Not every family can afford to let maids go off days, WEEKLY somemore!!
especially those with young kids & sick elderly!!
& for those parents who need to work on weekends/7days a week!!
THIS is a DOMESTIC arrangement..Govt should leave it to employers wot decide whether a maid is trustworthy enough/mature enough to get off-days!! I am VERY sure there are a lot of employers who do give off-days to maids who deserve it!!
UNLESS govt is subsidising say half of the cost of each maid, IF NOT, LEAVE it to US, the Employers, who are the ones PAYING...higher & higher, all the way!!
AND DO NOT compare Singapore to Taiwan & Hong Kong!!
Already, there were many differences pointed out, eg. they pay for own sir tickets if they break contract..& and will be banned from going back to work..& they pay for own acconmodation etc etc...
before criticsing S'porean employers for complaining, PLEASE make sure u know the whole situation!!
& WHY can't we blame govt?? Dear Halimah, while making yourself look so holy, for tha sake of the maids..did u do anything to help us reduce the cost??
Abolish Maid Levy!!! isn't this the easiest way?? does it take a genius to think of that?? & there are so many bright sparks in govt who are paid >$20K per month, u mean they are not able to think of this & suggest?!
Oh no! they won't, because they will risk their own golden rice bowls!!!
          coz Govt will be super-displeased!!
Why?? well!! I read in a npp articles that there are ard 200 000 maids in S'pore..base on $170 maid levy per month(in many families, can be higher if no kids at 12yr or younger+number of maids can be higher!!),our dear govt is getting min $34million PER month!!!
so u know why no one dare to suggest abolishing maid levy??
          U can dun abolish totally..
u can try to 'tranfer' to the maids, to make it more attractive to work here..
have a cpf system!!! make employers pay monthly still, but as long as maid complete 2 years contract..let them have the sum of $$!! even if they renew, they also still get it!!!
then at least, it becomes a big bonus to maids!! & can encourgae them to work seriously to complete the contract!!! & they will also 'get' higher pay as a result!!!!
Is this so difficult to think of??? Ms Halimah!!!!!!!????????
Stop pushing everything, esp cost, to us ,Employers!!!
I was and am still very happy, since SAt night 🙂 🙂
Hope people who should wake up!! will wake up soon!! if not, seats will b flying away...more & more!!!!!

Why do we expect maids to work 7 days week when we ourselves do not fancy that? If need them to work that extra day a week, it is only fair to pay them. If you can cope for that 1 day without them, there is no need to pay them even if they do not want that 1 day off. You can arrange it such that they have to get out of the house or if you are ok, they can rest at home while you head out or do whatever you need without their involvement. The off day need not strictly be on a weekend, try working it out with your helper according to your schedule.

When my maid first started with me, we agreed that her off day will be on a week day. Now my needs have changed, I need her on weekdays so I let her take her off days on weekends. She is now taking some weekly courses on Sunday and we just make do for that 1 day a week.

If the govt does not put in all these minimum wage and off days policy, countries like Phil and indo will not send their people over here as maids. And the end result will be us employers having to pay even higher wages to poach other people’s maid.

You will find that some opposition parties, and the organisations that support them, are even STRONGER advocates for maid's day off. They are even STRONGER advocates for having fewer foreign workers in Singapore, than the MIW.

What are you going to do then?

Halimah has taken the moral high ground, Good On Her!!

Has anyone wondered whats gonna happen to our malls and other places when we start giving maid weekly off days?

Yesterday I went out shopping for luggage/suitacase with hubby. At the mall, half the person shopping were maids…with BF’s. Mostly Indo/Philipino and BF either Indian or Banga!

Best part was…the maid were shopping with their present BF…but still busy oogling at my hubby and giving me smiles… My hubby commented that : May be the maid thinks you are also like them and I am buying you a luggage. LOL I had no come back on that…

Anyway after shopping, went to restaurant to have food… same story…saw a maid with indian guy…waiting for food…
During the my whole time in the restaurant…the maid was busy laughing and talking on the HP and the Indian guy was looking uncomfortable…just quitely watch and eat…

After some time, just finished and left. I think they just met sometime ago and decided to try each other’s company.

This is just something I noticed. And it is scary…

I know they are human beings too and we should be compassionate to them…
but during our own off days… we do not go and hook up with complete strangers to pay for our lunch, dinner, clothings…luggage etc…no morals here??

Also the incident of maid pregnancy will increase in exponential rates…including the spread of sexually transmitted diseases…

My neighbour just told me that she recently terminated her maid…and she will not be hiring any one now…
Her maid was 4~5 months pregnant during the six monthly check-up. Best part was her mother-in-law also stays with them…wonder when the maid found time to get pregy…?? you can guess…on the off days…

If govt insist of giving maid off days per week, they should also implement strict rules…
                1) Have medical check-up every 3 months…instead of 6 months right now–>this way easy to catch up on maids…who are trying to fool the employer…
                2) Any maid found pregnant should not be allowed to return back to SG
                3) Maid should not be allowed to switch owner more than once per year (unless ample proof that employer has been mistreating or harassing them)…if they do change without any reason…they should be penalized…
4)Maids who do not want leave should not be entitled to the extra money in lieu of the leaves every month…it should be deposited in a separate account and given to them…may be once a year…
if the maid leaves without completing her permit term… 50% of this money should be forfeit and given to employer as compensation to hire a new maid…

Well these are just my humble opinion…
I know many will not agree to this…

But it is high time govt look into welfare of their citizens. They want to be pro-family right…
Then should act so…each of their newly implemented rules regardng maid is not pro-family…

I have 2 kids and I am a working mother…I find it extremely difficult each time my maid decides to leave within a span of a day or two without notice…
I have no choice…but to take leave…(annual or without pay) to look after my kids…

Who will pay for my loss of income? How would I be compensted for the maid fee which I have to fork out min…3K?

On top of that the emotional trauma and change my family has to face each time is quite huge…

Mother777! I totally agree with u!! Maybe govt has to wait til Aids spreading like wildfire, like in certain country, then they wake up!!

Meanwhile,we are putting our families,ESP kids at risks!!
& to people who like to criticise us, I am telling u,NO One wants to employ a maid,if we are have other choice!!
Childcare services does not work for every family!not every one has the luxury to leave office on the dot to pick child…some parents need to fly around for their job…
& while giving recent big subsidies to childcare services, the families who reply on maids are neglected! AGAIN!!
& for the childcare subsidies, certain families who are having household income above limit set,are not benefitting…
They are the ‘sandwiched’ families…earn more than a certain group, but not considered filthy rich…they pay for same food, same transport,as the lower income group…so why they are left out?
Now is the right time to look for lower income job with less stress??

I may be opening myself up for a lot of criticism here but.....

Put yourself in a maid's shoes. You tell her that if she takes a day off she has to pay for her medical - because you assume she will be sleeping around?! Isn't that a total insult? Yes, I agree there are some who do, but there a lot who don't. They just go out, meet their friends, send money home and that's it.
