Can't blame us for thinking top primary schools bcos it wasn't stated top SECONDARY schools mah...correct? 😉

Sometimes, I really wonder if it is the mother OR the child who wants to go to that TOP sec school. You hear things like, 'my son is going to xxx school in Bishan'.

As parents, I think we need to have a good understanding of our kids' strength and weaknesses before talking about top schools... I assume the top schools mentioned here are for those top 10% of cohort? I assume if our kids are just average, top schools is not in the consideration at all. I rather be realistic.

My dd1 is sitting for PSLE this year. For P5, she received the top 25% award. So for Sec 1, we are looking at school COP range around 230-245. As this is what we think she will maybe land :xedfingers: (if all goes well)....

Schools in this range are not top schools to begin with. She has classmates aiming for DHS, etc... and she told me, that is not her aspiration as she don't like overly competitive environment. With peers influence, she does have a few schools in mind.

Their FTs started sharing Sec schools with them. They do have affiliated school but frankly, that is the last school that I want my kids to go. Recently their FT told them that, one of the students did very well during PSLE and decide to go to the affiliated school. She was put in top express class and is happy. Her decision was probably based on distance to home. So FT was probably trying to get them to think differently...
If you study the sec schools selection book carefully, good schools (autonomous & SAP) usually offer better programmes.

            TheAnswer:
Who are the ones being obsessed about entering top schools? Parents or students?

Top Primary or Secondary schools? If primary, it is definitely parents are the ones who make the decision for their kids. Whereas, secondary could be parents or the kids aiming for top schools.

To some parents, top Sec schools can be IP, Autonomous & SAP schools (COP 235 & above) Whereas to others, top Sec schools are the few elite schools such as DHS, NJC, HCI, RI, RGS & NYGS - COP 260 & above)

Top pri schools are GEP centres such as NYPS, TN, CHS, ACS etc.

top school? no big deal…in fact, they’re more problematic.

Oh yes! SORRY if I offend anyone but this is a good point. Top schools attract certain negative side of parents even more.

I think one of the reason why the school is a ‘top school’ is because it attracts more of this kind of parents.

Conversely, why cant the teacher speak english? If the principle cant speak chinese, wont there be a communication gap?

Can speak English doesn't mean it is their duty to translate.

They dont need to translate. They can just speak in english
How about the parents who cannot understand English?

If the teacher have to give 2 speech, isn't it akin to translating the MT version to English? Are are you suggesting double work for teacher?

Many pple are already feedback that teacher have too much burden..

Why add these unnecessary burdens to teachers? Their code obligation is to teach student, now need to entertain troublesome parents' unreasonable request too?

                    to add;

why are primary schools in the Bukit Timah area 'top schools'? definitely not because of the kids, right?

Btp is not considered a top school, and draws its students from nearby condos, private housings, and hdb folks in Bukit panjang and Bukit batok. It also has a noticeable number of foreign students from Asia, Europe and Australia. It is not a favored choice among locals though I personally think it is a very decent school.

I think the main draw of ‘top’ schools to some is the perception that they have some formula to turn out top students, and thus attract parents who prize academic achievement and prestige. Another group is attracted by certain available programmes, CCA, and facilities that are not found in "normal" schools.
