It's hard to find a child who initiates tuition...but when it happens, the effect will be stronger bcos he/she will have mindset to excel.
my DD2 is one of them :faint: which is costing me. She nagged at me for an entire year before I relented this year. It isn't easy having a 6 year telling me that I am wasting her time walking around places, I love her sister more so she gets to go. Even if she doesnt need, she can learn better and make new friends. 2 hours every week, broke me down.
I do wish I can save up on the enrichment cost as DD2 seems ok to handle maths on her own. -
DDs teachers are good IMO and do a good enough job.
Why I send them?
1. Chinese - Life Skill. The school does a great job, sending them for enrichment is to cement their interest. I relate my work to my DDs about how weak the adults are in Written and Spoken Chinese and it is a skill set which will make them competitive in the work next time.
2. Maths - My DD1 is average and relationship strains when I try to teach her so best option, outsourcing it. Her enrichment helps me keep an eye if she has issues. DD2 - I still haven’t figure out why I send her but probably to get her off my back on her nagging. -
We do not speak Mandarin. Even if we do, that is not sufficient to help kids with 作文, comprehension and oral...3 big ticket items in the exam.
For Math & Science, hubby does the coaching. Actually, son did very well for Math when he was in lower pri and above average for mid-pri...that convinced hub he was able to coach till upper primary...the first month he was in P5, all went haywire...hubby could not understand the big jump. From 80+, son dropped all the way to 20+ for CA1 :frustrated: -

CA1 failed, SA1 continue to fail but slightly better...SA2 51% after 3 months of intensive coaching and scolding.
The bite was very painful...so we have decided to start daughter for Math tuition next year...P4. At least when she moves to P5, the drop will not be this drastic. -

So they will share how is each other doing so it is easy to gauge. What about Meet The Parent session? There is a position or a score on how your ds fare against your class and level? Just curious where the gap was though it is already over.
Thinking if it is your school centric where the papers get tougher or? I spoke to some P5 parents and they let their DDs handle it on their own... nothing that bespoke of such pain. -

Yes, good academic results do not guarantee success in any career, but it increases one’s chance to land on a better job. Having good results in Singapore seems to allow the child to have the choice/priority to choose the Sec sch/JC/Uni, subject combination, course/faculty in Uni, etc.

If only school teachers can teach in detail, then we can save hard earned money...don't get me wrong, I am not against tutors.
the math holistic question r difficult....ds was the one who did some tough Qs,but now turned up answer was wrong.but she didn't indicate why it was wrong n ds said she didn't explain either.So dh n me looked at the question again n again...so clueless....

can i hv the contact of ur kids' tutor?actually good tutors are like life coach to kids. Just like mine. She's more than just a tutor. Even if the teachers taught my kids in details, I would still send them to my current tutors. The values and things they taught them are invaluable
I would say this is call beyond duty -
The Real Reason Why We Want Our Children to do well in their study?
- Introduce discipline and determination, from learning , time tables, time management, these are traits which will help in the future life
- instill drive for performance rather than be satisfied with what is achieved
- I want my girls to do well to achieve their own ambition and not be disappointed or lament about "What didn’t I work harder" kind of thoughts.
- Naturally, my kids do well, I feel good but neither do I want a bookworm on my hands. They should work hard and also work hard at other areas such as sports or music which ever their interest is (not mine).
- Learn to handle the stress. if my DDs feel the pressure to excel, it gives me the chance to coach them on how to manage it. Stress can also be a good thing so it is a manner of making sure that it doesn’t turn into a monster and destroy a person/child.
- by doing well, it also expands their choices. I will never know if they will change or what they will want in life but I do know by nudging them to do well. It will expand their choices to do what they want in life. They choose JC , Poly or whichever path but at least they have that option to choose.
