Depressed over p3 results

My mum will take care of him. We stay quite close. My mum used to work in SAF, army style. DS knows that his grandma is the no nonsense type so never try to be funny around her. My mum is more fierce than me.agree with TheAnswer.I believe in regular revision, easier for him to catch up also.
My boy doesn't do homework automatically, except Science n Maths. I've to sit besides to monitor him,if not,he'll move ard.
Everyday,I allocate 1hour to do quick revision. If he has homework n tuition, then no revision. But there'll be 2 to 3hours revision every wkend PM.
TheAnswer, who take care ur boy when u r out?
Only when finish the allocated work then can relax. My DH insist that no work for DS on the weekends or public holidays so everything must do on weekdays. -
I always teach him ahead of school. Usually on Tuesdays, June hols, Nov hols, Dec hols as I have more time then. He rarely has problems with his work. My DH also can teach him but he is plain lazy.

I am depressed over DD1 p5 results. We seldom let her do extra assessment books. In fact, from pri1 to pri4, she didnt have a single Chinese assessment book!
p5 is really a big gap from p4. DD1 was a good student up to p4. She had always toggled between band1 and high band2. But this yr she failed both language papers and 50s each for Math & Science!
I told my husband her failure is our fault. We did the minimum
and results showed. -
After last year’s PSLE, I have a different perspective…not that I bochap…but I see results in a broader view…I still plan CA/SA revision. In fact, daughter in P3 started SA revision for Math last night.
CA/SA is important…not the results but the understanding and foundation of subjects. What I can’t stand is the word ‘holistic’. CA is still CA…same goes for SA which covers oral, compo and language. Frankly it is just a play of words.
Hubby and I want to avoid mistakes made earlier when son was in primary school. So we plan to start younger one for Math tuition before she goes to P5…which is a torture where Math is concerned.
Education is a long journey…I cannot afford to get burnt out before kids reach O levels. -

Hubby and I still cannot forget the poor results over son's P5 results...he was in high band 2 up till p4. No offence...we were both hands-on with him. Even then, his Math failed badly...the others were marginal passes.I am depressed over DD1 p5 results. We seldom let her do extra assessment books. P4 to P5 is a big jump. It is just term 2 of P5, it is not too late to catch up. One of my boy (now in Sec1) former classmates (B class) used to get band 1 in P4 & he got only C in P5. His parents engaged a private tutor for him & he had to attend Math remedial class after school.

However, his Math grade has improved greatly in a year & he got A for his Math for SA1 in P6 & PSLE. My boy did not do a lot of assessment books when he was in P5 & P6. Understand the basic concepts, identify her weaknesses & learn from her mistakes. All the best! -
Hi all,
It seems that everything is difficult nowadays.
1) Science - concepts are not difficult to understand. But important thing is to be able to answer with keywords and in the manner required. MCQ questions are also not easy. They are tricky and a child with a poor command of English will have difficulty underestanding.
2) Chinese - Oral now carries 30% so cannot ‘si bei’. And cannot smoke your way through.
3) English - Vocab expected of a child is tremendously high now. Just try those papers from Cath High or Ai Tong. Its amazing.
The teachers don’t prep the kids at all for English compo, Chinese Compo or oral. But those who can write well can really write well.
4) Maths - Grossly difficult for a child. Especially for children who are poor at visual skills, will find a lot of difficulty drawing the models without which they can’t solve.
Why Singapore? Why? -

Because MOE is trying to move Singapore into knowledge-based economy with stress on innovation. The trouble with this is that I do not see the schools building a firm foundation with the BASICS. No firm foundation, no innovation.Hi all,

Another problem is the quality of teachers. Too many generalists who do not have a firm grasp of the subjects, esp science and maths. -

Not everyone can afford expensive enrichment classes. My P2 girl is not ready to write compo. She is still weak in grammar & vocab. If you want to help her to improve in her story line. Try to read more to her or even act out the story. It will help to develop on her imagination. Sometime kids just run out of ideas. Whereas, my P2girl can't spell out the words.Hi Mummylow
Yes. I do indeed feel that she is very bright! And all her tutors have rightfully mentioned so.
Am not fully sure what is her problem but like I mentioned in my earlier post, I think it is due to lack of maturity.....interest and all.
To make it worse, her daddy takes it easy. And she knows it! He will constantly tell her its okay.....maths is difficult....dunno never mind. For compo writing, simple words is fine.....to need to have more vibrant language. Whats wrong with a normal story line? Blah....blah....blah
This afternoon I was going through her homework and discovered a tonne of careless mistakes. Instead of telling the answer like before, I just circled those that were wrong, told her to re-look at it, and she came back with 90% of them correct!
I don't expect her to be the top....she is not one of those kids that have been hot-housed since young. I didnt send her to schishida and all. For pre-school, she only went to a half-day montessori in K1 and K2 unlike her other classmates then who were attending ICR, Berries, CMA and all.
But I think for me to expect 80% is not unreasonable.
