This article jolts me up from slumber.
BTO flats should always remain low-cost public housing for the masses and not for the rich and privileged.
There are so many ways to encourage social interaction between the different groups. Staying in a HDB flat with your door closed will not provide the interaction either.
This article also points to a failure in our meritocracy? Many AOs who are usually PSC scholars are selected based on their result apparently come from privileged family background. If they find AOs disconnected from the ground, why not review the selection process instead of asking potential scholars to stay in HDB?
Having said that, if the policy makers are so naive as to allow everyone to own BTO, you will see me queuing up for my chance too. Not because I believe in their community interaction story but rather I looking to enjoy a brand new unit with a high resale value or high rental yield after MOP :siam: -
Maybe let the higher income couple opt for lower subsidized flats, ie go for 5-room and above, ie, DBSS or EC as they can afford to pay?
But then all are Singaporeans, must have equal opportunities, can never satisfy everyone. -
Anyone viewing Sol Acres EC?

If they buy at subsidized pricing and then rent it out or make a handsome profit out if it, then it totally defeats the purpose.
The objective to for them to stay in one, but how many will do so they they get to buy one? -
Just to share my personal experience. When I first came out to work, I have been seeing quite a number of colleagues around me getting excited either for successfully balloted for a new flat or for pocketed more than $100k (at least) by selling the flat. I understand then that once you have got your new flat you have to get married in the next few months. So I have this feeling ... Whoa your 'ah gong' is so generous..giving you such a big angpow
imho, they want to sell it now or keep it and sell it in future, I think that is entirely their personal choice and also their own financial planning..If I m not wrong, every Singaporean is given a chance to buy a subsidized flat..that is, to me, fair la as all of us in a way pay tax and contribute to the country's economy. Even if we don't use the chance now, we can use it when we are older, hopefully. -
I like that ‘Every Singaporean should have one chance to buy a subsidized HDB flat, be it for marriage or when we are older.’ As we grow old, we may need more cash, hence, if we can sell whatever apartment we are staying during our old age and downgrade to a more affordable housing why not? At least we have cash to support us and not depend on Govt, children or charity.
