No, it's not that HDB owner are penalised. It's just that anyone who can afford a 2nd property is \"penalised\". It's a cooling measure to curb property prices, not a measure to punish HDB owners buying 2nd property. But HDB owners were required to pay 7%ABSD when they buy a condo, so rightly, they are already \"penalized\"
So should be able to keep both HDB and condo and once 5-years occupation period is over, should be allowed to rent out their HDB.
Again, HDB is meant to be affordable housing for the masses, not meant to be investment tool. If don't need it for housing, just release it to the market. -

Oic..I didn't know that the private home owners can't buy HDB even before the change.
All along, private property owners are not allowed to buy HDB. This is not something new.MrsKiasu:
Could this be one of the measures introduced to curb the HDB prices then? Remember few years back the HDB price was really quite high..it's something like double of the previous low.
Again, as mentioned earlier, what is the purpose of HDB flats? to provide affordable housing to the masses.
Note that there are still many young couples wanting to start a family but could barely afford a flat at current prices.
If you are the policy maker, do you feel it is right for rich pple to hog the HDB supply? If rich, go speculate in the private property market, nobody will stop you.
IMO, allowing HDB owners to sublet the whole flat(w/o compelling reasons) is just wrong. Sure they can buy private and get passive income from their private but they shd stay in the HDB for the purpose what HDB is designed to be, affordable ownership of a roof over their family. It's not meant to be an investment tool, just that too many pple abuse it.
This should be an election topic. -
It used to be that private property owners can buy HDB flats from the open market. That has been changed. Now if you own private, you cannot own a HDB flat thereafter.

Oh ok.. Got it. -

Nope, Mrs KS, just a few years back, private property owners were allowed to buy HDB from the resale market. 1 out of 10 who bought a resale HDB flats owned private properties.

After late 2010, only HDB owners (after they have met MOP), can go ahead and buy private properties (rent/keep their HDB flats) but private property owners must dispose all their private properties within 6months if they intend to get a HDB flat. -

If that is the case, still have hope that the original measure be reinstated after the HDB price is in control.
But agree..the current measure is unfair to the private home owners (only).
I also remember around that time so many measures coming out like for eg..the cap of number of years(?) allowed for renting out HDB that is owned by non citizens.. -
got to agree that hdb should not be used as a investment tool. hdb should stop allowing ppl who own pte property to rent out their hdb, instead owner who wanna to move to their condo should put their hdb on the market. of course there will be exception, ppl who’s parent shifted in with them could have their parent flat rented out.
imho, rich ppl should not hog on their hdb. -
