To solve all these problems, any subject below 78 marks just send the kids for tuition classes. If below 65 marks, better pay high fees for 1-1 school teacher to tutor.

If no money then when choosing for a sec school, just be contented to report to a decent neighbourhood school.

Nowadays, with so many alternative routes to higher education, it doesn’t matter much even if a kid doesn’t make it to their preferred school.

According to ds, most of his classmates have tuition.

That’s how they know what to do during Math class.

Ok. Thank you for the reply.

So, does your DS has tuition?

frankly speaking, I still believe that the students got to pay attention in class and if they have any doubt they should clarify with their teachers....I don't think my ds' school (his cohort) have many students going for Maths tuition( I supposed)...maybe teachers play a part... :skeptical:

No. (Or should I say not yet? )
Math is his strongest subject. He reads a lot on his own on this. He also did a 9mth online distance Math course (supported by other schools when we were living overseas). Maybe that helps.
On other subjects, he just study the notes given by the teachers.

I like the mock tests given by the teachers before major tests/ exams as they really useful for the kids. That's where they can learn from their mistake.

I always tell my kids to seek the teachers' help first.

I believe most of the kids in ds's class are doing well in Math (ie. not borderline or failing), but they just prefer a better score, thus the need for tuition.
Ds told me most of them go to the same tuition centre(s) or have the same tutors. When the Math teacher was teaching, the classmates would say that they have already learnt it. Sometimes, the kids would also offer other ways of solving the problem. So it shows that the Math teacher does teach in ds's class.

Yes, teacher does make a different… my little girl’s maths teacher is very dedicated and he even teach girls who are weak in maths during recess time…

And i heard of a P6 GEP maths teacher just ‘throw’ worksheet at kids and he will only explain questions which most of the kids is unable to solve…

So it really depends on the teacher-in-charge.

I thought that GEP classes are smaller? Isn’t the staff:student ratio something like 1:20, in contrast to 1:40 in mainstream?

                        Aren’t GEP teachers specially trained?

Also, I understand that GEP students have far more other resources spent on them - enrichment activities etc.

Does MOE publish the unit cost of educating a GEP student? What’s the comparison with a mainstream student?

With all these extra advantages, should there really be a need for tuition if the selection process is robust?
