My Daughter scored 257. COP for RGS is 260. Is it risky to apply?
-
1) Would like to find out if it is diificult or competitive to get into dance as CCA in RGS.
2) Understand RGS has semester system where exams are by semester. Is this correct? Are there weekly tests?
3) Are there any compulsory subjects to take in year 3 & 4? Some schools make it compulsory to take additional maths and combined humanities.
4) Will triple science be offered to all students who are keen or is it offered only to top students whereas all other students need to take only one or two pure science?
Hope to understand more about the above about RGS. -

1) Generally, sports are the hardest to get in followed by performing arts, then uniform groups.1) Would like to find out if it is diificult or competitive to get into dance as CCA in RGS.

2) there are no weekly tests. The main exams are at the end of each semester but different subjects may have different tests on random dates. For example practical for sciences. But the teacher will clearly state if it is counted in overall.
3) maths 1, maths 2, English, chinese, social studies are compulsory. Other than this, you need to take 4 more subjects. Any 4 from the following: bio, chem, physics, history, geography, literature. There are other compulsory subjects such as philosophy and research studies which are not counted into gpa.
4) most people will get their 1st choice of subject combination, sometimes all. Sometimes there may be a handful who do not get it. Triple science is offered to any student who wants it, not just top students. -

I think your daughter's score may not meet the COP of RGS which has so far never fallen below 260. However, she can always appeal after the S1-posting results are out. I have seen people who successfully appealed even though her score was 4 points below the COP. No harm trying. -

Not difficult to get into dance, but it's really dependent on your dd's abilities. I assume you're talking about International Dance? RGS also offers Indian dance, Malay dance, Chinese dance...1) Would like to find out if it is diificult or competitive to get into dance as CCA in RGS.

International Dance is one of the most competitive CCAs in RGS. To get in, your daughter has to have an experience in dancing and be very good at it. Apparently, only one (or even no one) on the Reserve list got in.
As to other dances, there is Indian Dance and Malay Dance. Indian Dance should be easy enough to get in if you learnt it before. As for Malay Dance, you can be of any race to join it (in fact, most members are actually Chinese) and isn't very hard nor very easy to get in.
P.S. jtoh, RGS does not offer Chinese Dance

Does RGS offer Chinese Orchestra as CCA? Is it difficult to get in/join? Thanks!

For Indian and Malay dance you can be of any race to join it. No prior experience in the specific dance required but some form of dance experience (be it in ballet etc) would be helpful.
I wouldn't say International Dance is the most competitive CCA in RGS. Sports CCA are usually the most competitive. Only 1-2 spots are offered in some Sports CCA after trials.
As in all auditions & trials, talent, ability and potential are most important so whether a CCA is difficult to get into really depends on the candidate's ability. If you're good, it's not that difficult. If you're average, it might be tougher to get into your desired CCA.
The best part about CCA selection is to go have fun and try out different sports/performing arts etc. -

Yes, RGS has Chinese Orchestra as CCA.
It's one of those relatively, only SLIGHTLY, easier to get in CCAs.
It is stated that you do not need to have musical background to get in.
(p.s I do not remember if they have changed any prerequisites since the year i entered the school)
HOWEVER, the better you are, the higher the chances you'll get in. It will definitely help if you have foundational musical background, (eg, ability to sight read musical notes etc), you NEED NOT know how to play the instruments in chinese orchestra. Whatever you know, will be an added advantage for you.
and of course, during the interview, you need to show your 'genuine' passion for CHINESE music, interest and willingness to learn etc, to convince (whoever is interviewing you, be it teachers or student leaders) to select you.
so yupp. here you go. -
My dd has been posted to RGS Year 3 via SPERS-SEC. As she has been studying in a Chinese school from primary school and we do not have friends with children of around the same age studying in local school (her cousin is a boy), we have questions about selection of subjects. I would very much appreciate your input in the following questions:
1. Does RGS offer Chinese literature?
2. She plans to take HMT
3. We are suggesting that she takes maths and add. maths (Maths 1 & 2?) - she is strong in maths.
4. On the same vein, any suggestions re: math olympiad in RGS?
5. She is strong in physics, so we are suggesting that she takes physics, chemistry and (possibly) biology.
6. What CCA would be useful other than cadet corps?
Thanks and happy holidays!!
