Hello friends, haven't been here for a while, and in case you are looking for a way to know if your child's IQ using a valid psychological test, here's one that our school is doing for free, as part of a research project.
Moderators, please move it to the right place if need be.
All Gifted is an organization based out of the United States, and specializes in delivering self-paced e-learning programs for gifted and non-gifted learners. They are looking for participants in this research project:

Have you ever wondered if your child is gifted, or if e-learning is suitable for him/her? Now you can know for free.
We are looking for gifted and non-gifted learners to participate in our research to know the efficacy of self-paced e-learning programs for gifted youth. If you have a child who is born in 2005 and 2006, and would like to participate, here's what we will do for your child:

2. Daily unlimited access to the Gifted Reading program
3. Daily unlimited access to the Gifted Math program
4. The IQ report, achievement in reading and math scores beginning, midway and end of the program will be issued at the end of the research
It is free to participate, but reports will only be given to those who manage to complete the research with us, which is expected to last 6 to 12 months.
To enroll, all you have to do is go to http://school.all-gifted.com/course/view.php?id=32 and click on the blue button that says \"Sign-in with Facebook\".
Don't miss this opportunity. It is unlikely we can do this again.

A bit dated but should still be relevant. https://www.facebook.com/notes/pamela-l ... 4548594547

Hi....Can anyone advise on gifted assessment? Help......
1) How does it benefit the child? Is it really useful? is it a waste of money?
2) does the education psychologist matter in the assessment? Or any education psychologist can do the job? Any good psychologist to recommend?
3) what is the price u paid?
I am surprised that DS's school initiated to have him tested for giftedness, in order to support his learning at school. Is the report really that essential that only with it then can the school support the learning? Without the report, hmmmm.....cannot support meh? I have no idea how beneficial is the assessment.
On 1 hand, with the report, i would be happy that the school can step in to assist in his learning cos I have no time to teach him. On the other hand, i am thinking since he is already quite advance for his young age, is it worth to pay thousands for such a report?
I was quoted around from $1k to $3k for such assessment :yikes: ... a wide difference of the fees....But then again, I am not sure how beneficial such report is... DH says this money can pay for enrichment already..
Can anyone who has been through this, advise?
Thank you so much. :rahrah: -
RE: How to tell if a child is gifted?
School is only a part of education. I believe the biggest advantage of schooling is not really to learn academic stuff, you can easily get educated these days through research, use Mother Google and the Youtube. There are many good resources out there that are even better than what they provide in schools.
So, it means that school has a different purpose, especially for the gifted. For socialization, to learn empathy, team-work, and other life-skills. And, therefore, whichever class they are in school does not really matter, as long as they get to mix with kids their own age. For me, like SimKhoo, the easier the curriculum the better. Then, I don’t have to even bother about what they teach, and the child just breeze through everything in class. Can feel a good sense of esteem and be able to help other students: the very reasons why I send them to school in the first place.
If, then, your child is gifted, and for that matter, every child is gifted in a certain way, we as parents must provide an avenue for them to maximize their potential. If a child is gifted in Math, then perhaps exposure in that area, ditto for language, or sports, or music or philosophy, or even social-emotional. We provide them ways to extend this beyond school, beyond presscribed enrichment by tuition centres, beyond ourselves. Education must be an expression of themselves and an extension of their giftedness.
If a child has to spend the whole day trying to catch up with deadlines and learning things that he/she is not really interested or has a propensity in, that that’s no difference from burying her talent/gift, because she/he has no chance to venture into those, and explore the realm of possibilities anyway. So whether the child is in the gifted program or not, it makes no difference.
Therefore, I do agree that in this time and age, where information is no longer sacred, that putting a kid in the most relaxed school makes the most sense. After that, it is the parents’ responsibility to explore into areas they are most gifted in. That way, the child will get to further his abilities to the fullest.
Ok, my 2 cents’ worth lah. Running off for another errand!
O, and I don’t believe mixing with kids less smart will make them less smart. There are tons of things kids can learn from each other. But I often want to choose schools that offer a safe environment, where the kids’ parents are involved. The neighbourhood is also important. Having said that, there are very few schools in SG that does not have that safe environment: like drug, smoke and porn free. -

4 of my kids did not take the GEP tests. Only one kid did and got in. Biggest mistake I made in my life. With or without GEP, my kids went on similar education paths. Just one happier than the other. I feel that perhaps only one child was under challenged. And that's the GEP one. They took up so much time I am left with little I could do with him. Now still trying to reverse that.
yes, ideally 2 to 3 hours a daySun_2010:
My take is Primary school kids need a lot of unstructured time, with bare minimum guidance/interference.
to read freely outside academic scope, idle if they wish to, play, draw, day dream, do hand stand -

Apparently research shows that gifted girls tend to conform or dumb down to fit in, while gifted boys act up or rebel without appropriate challenges. TEND to, not all.
Or called Impostor Syndrome, but that should not be observed at home. -

RE: How to tell if a child is gifted?
The admin folks at AIS once told me that it is hard to get MOE approval for gifted children, boys or girls. Gifted boys - harder than girls. Gifted GEP boys - impossible. Unless, of course, the child is diagnosed with disabilities, or twice exceptional.
I am surprised they even bother to take the applications, unless of course, hehe… they get your testing fees. You should really apply to MOE first or you will waste the money. -
