• RE: How to Save almost $1000 Every Year on Milk

      Hi Lee_yl,

It's not actually that shocking. Parents of all backgrounds naturally want the best for their children. Unfortunately, many of us have been led to think that Formula milk is the way to do this on the milk front. I used to be guilty of the same thinking myself in the past. Singaporeans are prime targets for these companies because they know we will pay thru the nose for the best! Our kiasu nature is our strength yet our weakness at times.

I was surprised to learn that even blue collar workers tighten their belts to buy FM for their young children. Maybe they can use your idea to feed fresh milk + fish capsules + multivitamins but provided they are disciplined enough to regularly feed them for the first 6 years of their kids' life.

I'm glad to see the news lately on this topic!

I have updated my blog post with new nutritional data from a replacement supplement. Most of the post remains the same.

What are the 6 supplements you give your child. Is it concurrently take 6 supplements in a day?

I would advise avoiding medication as far as possible... maybe use meds just before the big exams if really necessary. I suggest you Google ADHD medication and growth etc. I lost the links.

Beside Ritalin is there any other strategies or methods to help adhd child with inattention in class and organising his daily life/work.

Is it true that child with inattention doesn't outgrow unlike hyperactivity.

That is true. We have to find ways to motivate them. With praise and rewards for example.

      Hi

Doing homework to adhd children is usually boring task. However is inevitable that homework need to be completed. It become a tug of war between parents and child if child doesn't want to do.

    • RE: All About ADHD : Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Some of these do look ADHD like. However, he could also simply be lazy and resisting studying. My own son is 9 and we just recently finished with his Mid-Year exam preparations. LOL. It was trying in some ways but he was ok with some subjects like Math which he has always been stronger in.

I shall report back with the results in time. I give my boy 6 different supplements btw... but no meds.

      Hi

I suspect that my 9 yo boy may have ADD. These are the symptoms that make me draw this possibility :

      - For both Chinese and English comprehension, he doesn't read the passage properly to answer the questions. All the while he doesn't like to read. At the rare times when he read, he doesn't like to read mystery books. I think it is because he doesn't like to think about the mystery. Anything that he feels difficult, he will give up.

      - His Maths is no good. For problem sums, he gives up easily.

      - He is very careless in all his work. Be it copy from the helping words, he can copy wrongly.

      - He is absent minded. He loses a lot of water bottles in school. This year he lost 3 already.

      - His handwriting is awful

However, I did not hear from his piano teacher that he has learning difficulties. He is very interested in playing badminton and will keep bugging us to play with him to practice his strokes.

Any advise or comment is appreciated

      @snow24

I'm curious. Is there a specific reason why you mentioned composition? My own son dislikes compositions. I think it requires a thought process that he doesn't like. He likes the fact based stuff better - memory recall preferred over imagination.

      Snow24:
      Hi

Anyone can share how do you teach ADHD child on consequences. To differentiate right and wrong and not just subject to peers pressure.

How to improve their ability to expand and organise their thoughts and ideas eg for writing composition

    • RE: Helping a child to concentrate

Yup, that is the truth. It gets harder as he ages due to the complexity of work and the extra time and the focus it requires. I was reading that the parents actually play the biggest part in helping an ADHD student do well in school. This is because the parent provides the structure and support needed to stay on task.

ADHD has very wide degree of severity too. How bad is his ADHD? I've seen kids who truly cannot sit still for long and always aggressive. It's really difficult in those cases. (for the Singapore parent). I think it is unfair to bring in the subject of high IQ though. The majority of the kids will have normal IQs.
my friend's kid who are diagnosed with ADHD, can still do well in studies though cannot really concentrate well.

If the child is inherently smart (high IQ etc) it will help make up for the ADHD to some extent (also depending on severity), ie. he can learn a lot in even in the short time he is concentrating. But this may not be the case when the work gets more complex and requires longer concentrated effort. The worst combination would be severe ADHD and low IQ.
