Thanks GiftedGem. DS was so upset when he came back saying he did badly for CL LC and this was one of the questions he thought he got wrong. I'll told him he was right after all and that really boost his morale up!

Any feedback on the last English LC question. The question in gist was that the morale of the story was not to be greedy. A girl found a flute. When she blew it, she got some silver. She blew it a second time, she got some gold. She decided to return the flute and went to the police station. The policeman transformed into a wizard and told her luckily, she did not blow the flute for the 3rd time, else her clothes will turn into rags and all her money in the house will be gone. The wizard ended by telling her because of her wise choice, happiness will follow thereafter.


The answer chosen were mainly (b) honesty is the main policy while some chose gold and silver cannot buy happiness.

Rationale for (b) - in returning the flute, the girl has saved herself from misfortunes.

Rationale - the girl only returned the flute but not the silver and gold. She did not continue to try to blow the flute to get more gold or silver but she understood that happiness is not in getting more gold or silver but to live an upright live with good values such not being greedy.

To me, both answers are correct except which angle we are looking at. Question seems ambiguous.

Another method for your consideration:

The circle and the 2 smaller semi-circles have an overlap area.
Shaded area = 1)Area of big semi-circle - [2)Area of circle + area of 2 smaller semi-circles - 3)overlap area]

1)Area of the big semi-circle = 1/2n(18x18)=162n

2)Area of circle + 2 semi-circles = n(9x9)+2(1/2n9x9)=162n

Need to find the overlap area between the circle and the 2 smaller semi-circles

Area of quarter of the inner circle=1/4n(9x9)=20.25n
Area of right angled triangle=1/2(9x9)=40.5
Therefore, 3)overlap area = 4[(20.25n-40.5)] = 81n-162

Shaded area = 162n-[162n-(81n-162)]=81n-162 (ans)

Hi KSP, I’m very new to this forum and would like to ask for some help…


Anyone has got experience or knows of someone whose DS has gotten into HCI from WL2? Are the chances high? The school says chance is about 90-95%, but I wanted to hear from parents whose DS have gotten in from WL2…

Problem is DS has got 2 WL offers - from NUSH and HCI. Both schools say almost all on WL will get in, but have to put their sch as 1st choice… dilemma…
