    • RE: Relevance of Cognitive Science to language skills

Yes, I have read it. It’s been long, long overdue. Many countries have already adopted Cog Science to learning as it involves our most important part of our body - our mind/brain. So much time and research has been put into this field and there are also new discoveries on how our brain works.

With the change in the English syllabus, our kids will need to widen their level of understanding, knowledge and vocabulary as opposed to just learning for the sake of learning. Gone are the days of just doing worksheets. Worksheets do help but the lessons need to have more elements or areas that are interactive and engaging with a built-in cognitive approach.

    • RE: Comparing English Enrichment Programmes

      Hi,

Mine has been to I Can Read and is now currently attending BrainFit Classroom. Both are good but BrainFit Classroom suits him better as there’s written worksheets as well as online computer work. He enjoys the interactive portion of the class. In order to improve on their English, I believe that the child needs to enjoy the class.

      Hi,

I feel that ICR is still much better than LCentral. ICR is more comprehensive, better established.

    • RE: Reading Programs?

My godson attends BrainFit English Classroom at Parkway Centre and does reading via a software called Reading Assistant from the U.S. Impressive programme as it uses state of the art voice recognition system. It corrects/prompts him if he fails to read properly. It will also test him on comprehension after the reading.

      Hi

What what I know, sight words are also called Dolch words because some of them can’t be sounded out, and need to be learned by sight. Dolch word lists the 220 most common words used and 95 nouns. They provide a good base for reading at an early age.

My godson is currently learning them as part of his curriculum an English enrichment centre.

Neither have I. From what I know, kids have to learn common sight words for lower primary but not for upper primary. Best method is to read for vocab.
