Hi…,My 2-year-old DS is very interested in listening to some Mandarin Times Table songs he found on youtube. Is it too early to expose him to such resources? He can merely count from 1 to 10 for now and perhaps just a few more numbers but not greater than 20.All feedback are welcome.

sandunes:I think if the school has identify him as HA in Math, then I won't worry abt the academic part. My ds (also P5) just joined the Spore sch system late last yr. Before that, he was attending schools overseas. As there were no provisions for kids like him in the international schools, the schools allowed him to take the John Hopkins Distance Program (paid by the sch). He has completed Honors Algebra 1 and is eligible to move onto the next course which is Honors Algebra II or Geometry. Besides this course, I did not do anything else for him. He loves to read Math books. He started Murderous Math series when he was 8yo. That was really a great series! He also love Edward Zaccaro's books (avail on Amazon) then. Now that he is in the Spore sch system (GEP), he didn't continue with the Distance course. The homework from school is enough. I don't want any more academic training for him. He joins the AMEC in school but has yet to participate in any Math Olympiad competitions. He still reads alot but I only buy books selectively. Just visit the Library and look under Index 510. There are loads of interesting Math books! If u wish to explore more, u can consider going online. u can look at the following sites for ideas. If your ds is interested to learn more advance topics, he can do so online too.http://mathforum.org/dr/math/http://www.khanacademy.org/http://www.montereyinstitute.org/courses/For these kids, self learning is important. I think it is also important to encourage other passions. HTHHi, thanks a lot for the info, honestly all sound rather alien to me  but really appreciate the sharing. At least now I can start from somewhere. As to how far DS can go, the rest is up to him. Must agree, self learning and motivation is very important. Guess I should have been more proactive previously....instead of waiting till now.....but learning is never too late As to his other passion, that cannot be encouraged cos' its playing the Computer Games Cheers.

Hi all, I've been looking out for a Math enrichment class for my boy who absolutely hates Maths. Checked out a few places & all of them are too academic oriented.Came across Soma School in City Square Shopping Centre, http://www.somaschool.com.sg/, and found their methodology and tips in teaching maths interesting. Any parents heard of this school before? any comments to share? Many thanks!

    hihikitty:hihikitty:
Hi ParentsI would like to ask if any parent/s are sending their kid to Math Vision Enrichement Centre in Katong. I called them up yesterday and the principal claims that there is a waiting list. I understand its about 2 weeks for maths and 3 weeks for science. He is requesting me to transfer $1200 if I am keen to take both the subjects but I feel scared as its quite alot of money. When asked about his tutors he told me that I dont need to know about that. He also told me that he does not meet parents so I am abit spectical about this whole deal. There is no contract not meet up and just transfer the money. So I would really appreciate if any of you who have been there or have a kid there to let me have more information. I tried to google his tuition centre for reviews but found none. Thanks will give them a call. Really need to get someone soon as my DS failed his maths. He only got 45 so there is still hope provided I start now.You may like to checkout JEI Math/PSLE Math programme at Parkway centre 13th floor. It works well for my DD. I am actually quite grateful to them. The programme focus on problem solving skills and their worksheet is unique. Off hand cannot remember their number. Their website is http://www.primarymath.com.sgTel:63456439, ask for Jason.
SuperKaisu:I am a parent of a boy, who has had problems with his math. First, there was a motivational issue. Second, careless mistakes peppered his work. However, recently I found an Oxford University full time tutor who was able to correct his problems. From what I gather, motivation is key and the elimination of careless mistakes is also important. Finally, techniques to make sure the kids understand the concept well will truly unlock the kids' potential. These are my observations from the fantastic results produced.Unfortunately, he does not give home tuition but only group tuition. One wonders how much better it would be if my boy had one-to-one attention with him.For all parents out there, the key is thus motivation, being meticulous and having a well-grounded understanding.hi Super Kiasu, is this the maths tuition class you are talking about?http://cceprogram.com/featured/maths-smart-program/

optimistforum:Hi Has anyone used Challenging Maths P1 Sandhya Sundar - by EPH on their DC.My DS (7 in July) should be on P2 books, but exercises in that book are too challenging. Has anyone any thoughts on how best to use this book.Hi. I used the p3 one for my dd. Liked it and bought the p4 one for next year. Did you go through the egs at the beginning of each chapter with your ds before starting on the questions? I am always interested in exposing my dd to wider concepts outside the school syllabus for interest sake, not for scoring at exams. I find this particular author to do just that. Disclaimer: this is just my personal opinion. :imanisland:
