Scoliosis Treatment with Kevin Lau

Hi,
My son was asked to screen at Health Promotion Board, and after xray we were told that his case is mild scoliosis and thus needs monitoring for the next 6 months. Medical officer mentioned that this is genetic and not linked to diet, exercise or sitting posture when I asked there was anything we could do to prevent progression. Is what the Medical officer said true? Can parents who have experience share ?tks -

I remember I felt a sharp pain at the back of my neck on n off. Then the P6 physical exam came. That was how I was told my spine was not straight.Hi,

Hubby's youngest sister and I have a 9 years age gap. When I married into his family, I noticed that this sis-in-law sits loop to one side and when she walks, her shoulder is loop-sided too. So I suggested to MIL to bring the sis-in-law for checkup. Her spine curves to one side.
So I think it is not genetic. More of posture prob. -

Actually their way of walking is more because of the fact their spine isn't straight. No one walks lop sided unless their spine isn't straight

it really is genetic, but a poor diet and bad posture doesn't make things any better

My daughter has been diagnoised with Scoliosis 8 months ago and her recent check suggest that she needs braces now. She has not had her menses which means that she is still growing. i know the braces is going to make her very uncomfortable and wonder is she can still continue with her track and field CCA. I intend to visit Dr Kevin Lau after reading all the reviews on him and wonder if any experience parents has any advice to give…
Thank you -
I have scoliosis and both my kids have it too. Was told during my time that it is generic and has nothing to do with posture. Was told by another 2 different doctors this year when my kids go to Health Promotion Board.
I had a friend who has bad posture and hunch all the time but she does not have scoliosis. -
I am not convinced that scoliosis is genetic. My dd has it but no one from my side n my dh’s side has it.
I feel sad that only my dd has this problem. -
My dd was diagnosed with mild scoliosis in primary school and has to go to HPB for 1/2 yearly review. Her last appointment was this past Monday. It’s been 3 years since she was first diagnosed and doctor has said that her scoliosis is under control. She also said to continue with whatever we are doing to strengthen her back muscles.
Just to share what we did…
I had contemplated sending her to a chiropractor at first, but in the end, decided against it. The cost and the time factor were main deterrents. No time to send her for weekly treatments. Also, the doctor had also advised that going to a chiropractor would be of little use.
My dd started to swim regularly (basically, just swimming laps - freestyle or breaststroke) and she took yoga lessons. The aim is to strengthen the core and back muscles.
(An alternative to yoga is pilates, which is another form of core strengthening activity which the child/adult can pick up)
Sometimes, we go to the playground and she will hook her legs on those monkey bars step ladders, and then hang upside down. This helps to lengthen the spine and back muscles. Make sure an adult is there to supervise or assist for this activity. U don’t want the child to hurt himself/herself.

Glad to see so many comments. I guess every case is different for different kids.
I went to see Dr Lau with my daughter 2 days ago & decided to go with his program. It will take time management, persistent & money but I prefer to do something to prevent it from worsening. Not sure what the outcome will be but need to give it a try. Have been asking my girl to monitor her posture & swim at least twice a week.
I am still undecided on the braces though… Any comments? -
Mummyoftwo,
What was his attitude like when u saw him? Found him somewhat cold and impersonal and did not like the fact that he just left my DD to do the exercises without ensuring they were done correctly.
