My dd is in year 1. I am concern on her HCL as she is borderline. I bought 2 assessment books for her to complete by June holiday. Anyone facing the same issues as me?
The teacher recommended my DD to read more Chinese newspapers, watch Chinese news and dramas, and practise the past RV HCL papers available in the library. My daughter gets easily bored with news so I have been buying her \"iWeekly\" magazine constantly. Not the most academic reading but at least she has interest in entertainment news so hope to slowly trigger more motivation in the language...

I think group tuition in tuition centre is more effective for HCL. Home tuition focuses more on practice. For language, interest is more important. If the tuition centre teacher is experienced, she can arouse the interest of the students. In such way, your child likes the language more and can learn better.

I'm an RVHS Alumnus. I think our peak was within the 2010 and 2011 batches (when we were just handed over from Ek Soo Ben over to Koh Yong Chiah). After that, i think the dip has been pretty significant. I remember our 2011 batch, 44% of us had like 3 distinctions at A levels. As Grandyma pointed out, the 3h2 distinctions just hit 31%.Grandyma:
As to RV results comparable to NJC and TJC? NJC 2016 'A' Level results are better than RV.
NYJC 2016 A level are results better than RV too.
But RV results is better than TJC.
It appears that RV and TJC are the only 2 IP JCs that are not performing as well as the other IP JCs.
Back in my time, GP was pretty much the only killer subject (we were trying to hit 100% pass for this) and if you didn't get the required C for GP, a lot of Uni courses would require a makeup language course. Not too sure how the status quo is now, but generally, it doesn't look very promising if the overall distinctions for other subjects are falling.
That said, A levels is only good for getting your foot into a university (as an added bonus, a scholarship). I know a few of my peers who are doing very well now, but had pretty disappointing results at A levels. -

I think it's possible to let her play in year 1. Just make sure she pays attention to the substantive subjects such as math (most important), the sciences as well as the arts subjects, so that she knows what subjects she wants to do for A levels later on. More importantly, start equipping her with learning/self studying skills that they don't explicitly teach in RVHS, such as critical thinking (I recommend Critical Reasoning, a Practical Introduction). My biggest grumble with RVHS is that there's too much spoonfeeding. Students' aren't really expected to learn anything outside their notes. The transition from JC to University is huge as a result, because there students are expected to make sense out of all the readings and data thrown at them, on their own... -

The students will go through a reselection test every year, plus they need a gpa of at least 3 or 3.2 and math score of a2 to pass. The cutoff points are different for each year. The students get to participate in math competitions for free + I heard that the year 3 batch got to organise an event for corporation primary this year

hey, it's actually because they separate the weaker HCL students from the stronger ones, and the weaker ones are all in one class so they can be taught at a better pace. (on another note i think only HCL students canenter the sch unless they're dsa students)
Actually they segregate those which has taken HCL in Primary School from the ones which did not take HCL in Primary School.mother777:

my DD mention that students from different classes were asked to move to another class just for HCL lesson today..so was wondering.. -

Its under NTU mgt since last yr I think.
