This thread was started to generate interest, to discuss and record YOG.

For certain quarters, the word ‘orgy’ connotes only x.
However, this word and ‘mass orgy’ are common usage
in local Singlish parlance to mean a large, noisy gathering
that’s at times messy.
Mummies, don’t be shocked when your sons come back from NS
knowing this and using it in this context.
Though I must admit I wrote whY OrGy in Singapore?
as the header to draw attention to the thread.
U think other HS parents would read it otherwise?

Nevertheless, in view of the negative feedback,
to maintain KSP peace n harmony,
and to prevent further deviation from the original aim of the thread,

ps: you are right about the other connotation of the word, Way2GO. This is also the definition that I found in my Collins Cobuild EL Dictionary:

\"You can refer to an activity as an orgy of that activity to emphasize that it is done to an excessive extent\".

There are 2 sentences to illustrate the use of this word based on the above definition in the dictionary:

1) One eye-witness said that the rioters were engaged in an orgy of destruction

2) He blew $43 000 in an 18-month orgy of spending

I learnt how to use this word in another context today

I do know the meaning of orgy. It’s used in a negative sense. Why should an occasion like the YOG be associated with such a negative word? Is this wat the so-called gripes refered to by MM Goh in his recent speech?
