Hwa Chong boasts top student in S'pore
Hwa Chong Institution produced a record 94 perfect scorers for the 2010 A-level Examinations, the best results in four years. -- ST PHOTO: ALPHONSUS CHERN
KOH Mingming - the top student across Singapore - scored nine distinctions at 13 AUs. She was part of Hwa Chong's bi-cultural studies programme and is effectively trilingual (English, Chinese and French). She now has a place at Harvard and Yale.
Hwa Chong Institution produced a record 94 perfect scorers for the 2010 A-level Examinations, the best results in four years.
It did exceedingly well in the Humanities, Mathematics and Sciences.
More than 60 students scored eight distinctions and better. For the fourth year running, Hwa Chong had more than 200 students score seven distinctions and better.
Over six in 10 Hwa Chong students scored 3H2 distinctions and better, making them eligible for admission to any top university worldwide.
In addition, two students were awarded the Gold Medal of Excellence in Physics, presented by the Institute of Physics to top A-level Physics candidates. -

Top Performer Once More - Raffles leads the way in the 2010 GCE A Level Examinations
A total of 1185 students at RI sat for the 2010 'A' Level Examinations - the largest of all JC cohorts.
Outstanding Achievements for Class of 2010
The class of 2010 posted yet another outstanding performance in the 2010 'A' Level Examinations. 509 students (43%) scored 4 distinctions in the content-based subjects, and 780 students (66%) scored at least 3 distinctions in the content-based subjects.
In addition, 53% of students scored distinctions in the General Paper, compared to 49% in 2009, while a record-breaking 72% of students scored distinctions in Knowledge and Inquiry.
28% achieved perfect University Admission Points of 90. The University Admission Score is computed based on a maximum score of 90 points, and takes into account General Paper or Knowledge and Inquiry, Project Work, 3 H2 and 1 H1 content subjects.
The class of 2010 surpassed the previous cohort with 130 students (11%) scoring distinctions in all subjects offered, compared to 9.7% in 2009.A new record was also set for H3 subjects, with 1 in 2 out of 413 candidates scoring distinctions.
Performance of Individual H2 Subjects
The class of 2010 outperformed their peers with exceptional performances across the various subjects.
9 in 10 students scored Distinctions for Malay Language and Literature.
8 in 10 students scored Distinctions for Physics, English Literature and French.
7 in 10 students scored Distinctions for Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics, German, Knowledge & Inquiry, and Tamil Language & Literature.
Performance of Students
The following is the breakdown of the number of distinctions obtained by our students:
9 Distinctions: 3 students
8 Distinctions: 73 students
7 Distinctions: 169 students
6 Distinctions: 261 students
Top Students
The top students are Nigel Fong Jie Ming, Kaushik Subramanian Venkataraman and Barry Tng Jia Hao. All three offered 13 units of study, above the norm of 10 to 12 units prescribed by the GCE 'A' level curriculum, and scored distinctions in all subjects offered. All of them were part of the first cohort of students from the Raffles Academy, a talent development programme comprising an accelerated and enriched curriculum aimed at nurturing peaks of talents among highly-able students.
2010 Singapore Science and Mathematics Olympiads
The Singapore Science Olympiads held at the end of 2010 saw the RI teams returning triumphant, with the Chemistry team bagging 14 out of the 17 Gold medals awarded, the Physics team winning 5 out of 6 Gold medals, and the Biology team clinching 4 out of 8 Gold medals. RI also won the Best Team awards as well as the best Overall Individual Performance awards at the Physics and Chemistry Olympiads. For the Singapore Mathematics Olympiads, RI clinched 19 out of the 71 Gold medals.
Scholarships and University Admissions
Even before the release of the A-level Examinations results, more than 50 students have received provisional scholarships from the various scholarship agencies, such as the PSC, EDB, A*Star and DSTA.
RI continues to be the gateway to Oxbridge and the Ivy Leagues. Even before the A-level results release, 32 students have already been offered places at Oxford University and 27 at Cambridge University. 20 students have already been offered places at top U.S. universities, e.g. Yale, Pennsylvania, under the Early Decision scheme. -
Comparing the common available info from RI and HCI, it seems that RI is doing much better than HCI across the board

Thanks for the summary. Looking at the perfect score category, RI & HCI together produce 425 of them. If we add the other JCs I think the total will be about at least 450. It is really tough to get into medicine (only about 260 places).Comparing the common available info from RI and HCI, it seems that RI is doing much better than HCI across the board

Tan Zhi Xiang from RV should be the absolute top student this year since he has 4H2, 2H1, 2H3 ,HMT (A1) and Gold medal from IPS while Koh Ming Ming has 4H2, 3H1, 1H3 and HMT (A1). All the other 4 have only A2 for HMT.

In my opinion, RI is too overrated. Also, most of them are very proud. Well that is what I think. Hwa Chong has a better community overall.

There is something special about RV's culture. Before RV goes IP, most of their top O-level students went on to be among the top scholars in RJ. Won't be surprised if RV catches up with RI & HCI in a few years time. But only one setback I noted - they are super hardworking. :lol: -
