For home use, forget about laying cables. Use wireless ip camera. This way you can place the camera anywhere you like - as long as there’s a power point near by. Basically, there are 2 types of cameras. Fixed and pan/tilt camera. Pan/tilt camera will give more flexibility as you can view 180 degree but cost a bit more.

Chances are you already have internet access at home. So just connect to the router wirelessly. Btw, you also don’t need to switch on PC whole day. Just switch on the router and camera will do.

decided to install CCTV instead. Certainly much more expensive but i need to store and view data later. I don’t have the IT knowledge to link up 4 wireless cameras, a router and a HDD.

It’s also a backup in case there is some failure in the wireless or internet. At least the data is stored in the HDD for up to a month. The CCTV are also IR capable so I can view my entrance/exit at night.

Comes with 12 month warranty for on site service etc…guess i am paying much more for convenience and security…plus not easy to find someone professional enough to cable up a landed property with 4 cameras over 4 floors.

for surveillance software, try this company -->http://www.homecamera.com

Their software which allows your IP camera to have motion-sensor capability. Used to be free, not sure whether promotion has ended.

me? I am still waiting for IP cams prices to fall

Hi sha2811, I m also looking for one. Presently there is one who came to my house to survey and quoted me $1380 for 4 camera and 1 recorder. Can use for internet viewing. The recorder is Taiwan brand. Warranty is 1 year. I m still sourcing if I could get cheaper than this.

Best is get KOREAN set. The Taiwan set is very unstable (for internet viewing).

$1380 also depends on how big memory is your recorder. If you want cheap then get smaller memory and back it up frequently or watch and delete unnecessary video frequently.

My hb sells these & my house/car has a few different types of CCTV 🙂

I just got another quote for 4 cameras and 1 recorder includes installation at $1150. Think this is the best price so far.

Mrs wong I drop you an email before but never receive your reply at all.
