DSA - RI / HCI confirmed

While your friend's son did alright for Math, his English and HCL marks are below baseline, so that is not very good. His average is also on the weak side. The good news is for DSA, the schools probably look at CL marks, so if his CL is better than HCL, than his average may be pulled up.Thanks for your advice!
Sorry to ask some details question.
My friend son result for SA1 (GEP) math is around 85, science ard 78, Eng 60, higher chinese 55 not so sure about SS. Is this kind of results consider weak or average, pls highlight, any parents would like to share , especially those awarded DSA to RI and HCI
Has he thought about NUS High? -
Your friend’s son is weak in both languages. 85% for GEP maths can be considered good, 78% for GEP science can be considered average. If he can pull his score for english to 75% and chinese to 70%, I think he will be ok. He is in P5 this year, so still got time to catch up.
I don’t think your friend’s son can maintain the GEP status with this kind of result. If you can not even maintain the GEP status, it will be hard for RI or HCI to accept you as they might not even see you as GEP student. -

Thanks john. I'm unable to comment on below average getting into RI/HCI as I'm unaware of son's classmates results. However, I would advise those who are below average to apply to schools other than these 2 to increase their chances of acceptance. If they're waitlisted in RI/HCI and a confirmed in another school, the kids would feel better too. At least they don't feel like rejects. Feel sadHi Mathsparks.Congratulation to your son! Few question to ask you....Are you able to elaborate What do you mean by saying GEP student standing a good chance. I have a friend his son is in GEP, but he is very worry for his son, as his son study is average, sometimes below average. Do you mean my friend son is still standing a good chance as compare to the main stream students?Do you have any existing cases you know of to share? I mean below average GEP student get into RI or HCI.
Thank u!
for some kids who till now has no acceptance. Their morale have definitely suffered.
Regarding yr friend's son - looks like he's doing well for maths and science. Advise him to take part in the RIPMWC and SMOPS next year to increase his chances of NUSH. It's not too late to pull up for the languages. Seek out the learning lab if he needs english tuition. My son is weaker in languages too. Scoring below average for languages but above for maths/science.
Yr friend's son can maintain his ge status in secondary school if he passes ss in p6 (if I remember correctly, 70 is the passing mark :? ) and goes to an ip school. There's a lot of emphasis on ss - so pls don't neglect that.
Thanks joy, dharma, turquoise, flametree, sally for all your kind wishes. I've been so happy I had trouble falling asleep last few nights.
Good luck to joy in 2 years time and flametree next year. Hope I can give more advice along the way.turquoise:
:congrats: to turquoise too for yr girl's entry to rgs. Yes, there're gold awardees not accepted in HCI, but waitlist in RI, and I also know of a kid with platinum not offered in HCI. So we've to dispel the myth that platinum or gold would get you into these 2 schools.
I think SMOPS results are held in high regard at NUS High but less so at RI, HCI, RGS and NYGH. Getting a Platinum or Gold may not secure you a place or even an interview at these schools. I kinow of at least one SMOPS Gold awardee who did not even called up for an interview with any of these schools. I'm not sure about Platinum awardees. If anyone has any information, please share.
Sorry  , folks. I was mistaken also. Having a hard time looking for the post where I mentioned that having a plat or gold increases the likelihood of entry. Hate to perpetuate rumours.Ban:
Thanks ban. We don't really have to think too hard on this as RI is the nearest for us. Kid doesn't have to spend too much time travelling.
Congratulations, Mathsparks. I can imagine the joy of mother and son. The hope of all parents to 望子成龙。 RI must be the obvious choice of the 3.
Phew! What a long reply. -
My son has SMOP platinum award but wasn’t offered by HCI. He is in waitlist2. Think the reason may due to dropping of HCL.
My colleague told me that his son’s classmate from mainstream has SMOP silver but has HCL was offered by HCI. -

That could be a reason. Was your son offered a place in RI and NUSH?My son has SMOP platinum award but wasn't offered by HCI. He is in waitlist2. Think the reason may due to dropping of HCL.

Hi Father_of_3, your son got HCI waitlist 2, may I know if he has been called for a briefing by HCI. Thanks! Good Luck!

I don't think HCL is the only reason. Friend of son with platinum who takes HCL did not even get a waiting place from HCIMy son has SMOP platinum award but wasn't offered by HCI. He is in waitlist2. Think the reason may due to dropping of HCL.

Was he shortlisted for the DSA test and interview? Guess the GAT/Eng/CL test during DSA are important factors.
