ok, i just wanted to say some of my views on choosing schools, in order to have a balanced view. probably cos the last few posts were all about scholarships and the very last one happened to pick out from MOE website's info listing only the RI holders, so I felt it is not nice to omit all the other medal winners?
I'll unsubscribe myself from this topic from now. Cos I am not here to argue or side any school. I can see how strongly some feel about their particular schools here. Don't want to be hantam since I think I am the minority.

we are here to to share info and opinion and hopefully also gain some useful info
some of us may be more sensitive and hence more defensive
some of us just say our thought and don't care how others perceive it
some may be more assertive and tend to correct others' perceived biases

All RI or HCI supporters are likewise welcome to do so. This is afterall a democratic country, isn't it
As parents, we are not daft, so to speak, we would also look into school environment, programs, cultures, apart from academic performanance.
Let me explain why academic perfomance is important.
Both RI and HCI takes only the creme of the crop. But why is RI producing 3x more President scholars than HCI this year and x times of scholarship holders and Olympaid medallists more than HCI? HCI seems only to have a Biology Olympaid medallist.
This will tell me how the school , teachers and its programs is value-adding to the ability of its cohort.
Remember the quality of intake is the same for both schools, but why the output differs so measurably ?
Being a parent, of course I will choose the more value-adding school. -

Though you may say that RI and HCI both take in creme of the crop, they are schools with distinctively different culture and maybe even teaching, coaching and learning style. The environment that suits one kid may not suit another, and as parents, we should advise kids based on their characteristics which school might suit them. Does it really matter how many president scholars or medalists the school produces? Majority of the kids in the school are not the president scholars or medalists. Unless of course your kid is of that calibre, then you might want to think deeper / consider this aspect. My take is still that the BEST school for the kid is the one that suits your kid, be it RI or HCI, choose the one you think fits better.

my dh was from RI while i was from HCI (HCJC to be exact, as HCI was a seperate school from HCJC, at my time). my DS has gotten a CO from RI but i'm still waiting eagerly for the dsa results from HCI. if DS is fortunate to get a CO from HCI as well, we will let him decide which school he wants to join ultimately. but as of now, DS has indicated, rather clearly & firmly, that his first choice will be RI, as RI has always been his dream school. :roll: -

We are comparing RI to HCI, not some 3rd rate schools....of course then academic performance matters .
Students in both RI and HCI are creme of the crop, therefore they are potential schorship or Olympaid medal holders. Again we are not talking about lower ability children here.
The fact remains, given the input quality is the same, why does RI produces so much better output quality than HCI ?Doesn't this say about the school's ability to value-add ? Isn't that important for parents ??? -
Pls do not only look at awards and scholarships. We also need to look at moral values and "streetsmartness".
Any comments on RI Pulau Tekong swimmer or Hwa Chong PSC Scholarship Bond Breaker cum National Service evader ?
