Musings:
Hi musings, the library does have them (and I see it on the shelves a lot).Hi need some help.
Does anyone know where to buy the Magic Tree House series of books in Spore? I am specifically looking at the non fiction books in the series - Fact Trackers.
Thanks!
If you want to buy, I did see a couple of titles at Page one still when I went last Sunday. they are having 50% off until 19 Feb (that's when they close officially). Not sure if you want to go check it out. I saw the books at the Children's english books section. -
can i ask ? DD K1 teacher taught them to say “eh” for A but in leap frog and starfall.com it’s pronounce at “ah”… “eh” is very near to E sound… which is correct? DD teacher said the song " Ant on the apple, ah ah ah" is wrong… she said if you say A sound is “ah” how do you promounce ANT ? it’s “eh” n “teh”… ANT… can advise? cos this has confuse my DD she come back telling me teach said A is not “ah” but “eh” but “eh” is for E…

Everyone, thanks for the suggestions on where to find the Magic Tree House books.
I have discovered amongst the local bookstores, Kinokuniya carries the books.
But I have been buying online from Bookdepository.com. It’s much cheaper and has free shipping to Singapore.
I highly recommend the Magic Tree House books as a transition from picture books to chapter books. Thus far, my DS in P1 has been hooked on the books and finishes 1 book (average length of 70 pages) in one day.
The best part is the series introduces kids to wide ranging subject matters such as history of ancient Greece, ancient Rome, ancient China, ancient Japan etc. The non fiction titles provide the historical facts and background of the story in the fiction titles which widens the kids’ general knowledge.
I have always found our primary school kids are not exposed to a breadth of general knowledge beyond English, Maths and Science unlike Western school curriculum which places equal emphasis on World History, Art, Geography etc from a young age. So I find the Magic Tree House series is a very useful tool to expose kids to these things! -
I’ve bought several of the Magic Tree House Series and a year ago, I started to buy the Audio CDs that match the books and my kids ages 6-12 simply love it!! The CDs are read by the author herself and they bring to life the stories. My youngest especially developed excellent vocabulary from his daily listening to audio cds.
For young readers, Arnold Lobel is a fantastic author with many heartwarming and funny stories. We love his audio cds too. -

Hi All,
I read this post with interest. I have a 5 yo son, whom can’t read yet. I’m been teaching him phonics and blendings. He is able to sound all single alphabets but not the blends. Is it true some kids just can’t blend ? If yes, any suggestion how to teach them?
I’m getting really fraustrated, as been teaching him for so long, yet he still can’t read at all. I feel so guilty as he can feel my stress as I started screaming at him on several occassions and he is stressed too. I’ve enrolled him with phonics class … not much improvement though. -
Hi Mummyof Stars, i have the exact same issue with my son; he knows the sounds of each letter but can’t blend. Anyone has suggestions for a single FTWM like me?

MummyofStars, i just pm you.

Hi
Can someone comment on whether what I am doing is sufficient for my DS.
DS is now 3.5 years old. He attends full day child care during weekdays and speech/drama class on saturday. On the evening in weekdays, I coach him on reading. What I do is this :
- Teach him a few new words to build up his vocabulary
- Read a story to him
- Teach him to read peter & jane series. He just completed 3b.
Do you think merely reading peter & jane be sufficient? Do i need to introduce other books?
Thanks! -

I think it depends on the reading ability of the child. A 10 year old with reasonable reading ability is likely to find Magic Tree House too simple. Magic Tree House is generally classified as 'beginning chapter books\". All books average about 70 pages which is not too daunting for a child just moving on from picture books - not generally not long enough to have a more complex plot development which older kids would prefer.
The Merlin series (also Magic Tree House) is pitched at more advanced readers even then I think may be too simple for 10 year old.
But if you have a 10 year old who does not read much or is a reluctant reader, it won't hurt to nudge the child towards reading by simple beginning chapter books like Magic Tree House. Better than not reading at all... -

Personally I thk what you are doing is great and definitely sufficient, esp he is only 3.5 yrs old.
As long as he is happy with P&J, you can let him continue because P&J books is one of the proven series that can assist young kids to build up their reading ability.
But maybe you shd also introduce different types of books eg Dr Seuss (beginner's level), Richard Scarry, Usborne Phonics Series etc.. these funny books not only can tickle him, at e same time can intro to him phonics and new words at e same time. -
How to get your kids to read
1. Visit library with them every week
2. Read 15 minutes every day
3. Learn 3 new vocabulary every day
4. Bring them to excellent movies
5. Let them choose their own books -

My 6 years old is not that good in his readings so I suppose he can't read this too...He is currently reading only those \"I Can Read\" Level 3 books and the Frog and Toad series and the \"little critter\" series. What other kinds of books can I introduce to him...I can't imagine if he still contiinue to read this kind of books when Pri 1. (ie next year) Am tinking of introducing chapter books to him but am afraid he will be put off...already difficult to get him to read level 3 books with him daily.
I dun have a problem w my elder one when he was young, he is a good reader unlike my younger one. Giving me headache.. -

The classic fantasy trilogy of Elmer Elevator and the flying baby dragon has delighted children and their parents for generations. Now, on the occasion of their fiftieth anniversary, Random House is proud to bring the three timeless tales together in one beautiful commemorative edition, complete with the original delightful illustrations. A Newbery Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book, My Father's Dragon is followed by Elmer and the Dragon (\"rich, humorous, and thoroughly satisfying\"*) and The Dragons of Blueland (\"ingenious and plausible, the fantasy well-sustained\"*). Each story stands alone, but read in succession, they are an unforgettable experience.*Library Journal, starred review
