3 Year Old Niece In ICU (Hospitalised)
-
Hi,
My niece had a successful liver transplant on the 13th April at NUH and has since been recovering well. The team was led by Prof Prabhakaran and Prof Quak who have done an excellent job. The members surgeons in the team were so confident with Prof Prabhakaran that they assured my sister she will definitely be impressed once we met him and indeed we are.
My niece maybe discharged from the hospital soon. Everything go well except that her bile duct maybe partially blocked or swollen, but it is nothing serious compare to her previous condition. -
So happy for your niece after your update. Yah!! :rahrah: :rahrah: :boogie:
She's really blessed for an uncle like you! -
Congrats Weihan! Excellent news indeed. Here’s hoping for her smooth and quick recovery!

Am so glad to read at the end that things are fine now. It is such a relief and may the little girl be blessed. -
Great news indeed. Weihan could you remind us again, how did this condition develop and what were the telltale signs so that we could all learn from this and act swiftly when things don’t seem right with our kids the next time round thanks

The cause is still unknown after they took the removed liver for analysis.
In fact, it is a fulminant hepatic failure, it develops so quickly within 1-2 days which i don't think any adult will detect it faster. First, she got hand foot mouth disease but her fever recovered within 1-2 days. The paracetamol which the doctor prescribed was well within tolerated dosage and both NUH (KKH also) have ruled out that it is due to panadol toxicity. After her hand-foot-mouth disease recovered, she looked tired which is normal (after hfmd). Nobody will suspect that something is wrong. Even the GP didn't expect anything. In very short time, she started to vomit after taking food and after that she was even more tired and slept for the entire day. that was the last sign we notice and we admitted her to the hospital the following day when she continued to sleep. At the time, when she was admitted, the skin started to turn slightly jaundiced which even the KKH doctor didn't notice initially. -
My niece has been discharged from the hospital and is still recovering well in the comfort of home.
I am sad to hear that another 9 months old boy who was admitted around the same time to the hospital as my niece due to liver failure also has died last saturday. The doctor has suggested liver transplant to his parents but the father insisted in waiting. To me, he doesn’t seem to understand the criticality. It is ashame that no one near to him has been able to advise him on the appropriate action. the baby has an internal lung bleeding 1-2 weeks ago and after that week of coma, died immediately upon removal of breathing support. -
