Hi All Parents!!
Recent release of PSLE results make me realized how competitive today's education system is. Being a first time mommy to a 3yo kid. Will like to learn from u any tips to help them cope better.
Not target to score excellent in PSLE, but at least equip her with \"survival\" skill so that she can have an enjoyable childhood too.
Pls come in to share what u tink is important to prepare them. The goods and the areas of improvements u will like to do, urself.

A few days ago I chatted with my colleague over lunch. He is a principal lecturer with more than 30 years of teaching experience. He has 3 kids, 2 of which were in the GEP. All his kids are grown up now, and all have them have respectable careers.
He told me that language is most important. Once a child can read and write very well, all the other subjects will be very easy. Even Maths require students to have a very good understanding of English in order to do well.
That is the why I focus on teaching my kids to read very well since 3 years old. Check out my blog :

Now we don't have to spend time learning spelling because my kids can spell any word easily using phonics. My kids are also able to do their homework independently.
Reading very well is the most important \"survival\" skill that we can teach our kids. A child who can read has the freedom to learn independently and at any time. Reading very well does not mean only reading picture books with 3 sentences, it means the ability to read 500 words in 10 mins or less
and of course understanding what he reads.
Unlike other parents, I did not send my kids to abacus class. They don't know how to add and subtract like a calculator. I only make sure that they know the maths concept very well, even if they take a little longer to add 2 numbers together, it is fine with me. Anyway, kids can use calculators from P5. -

My ds is going to P1 next year (next week). :!:
Since the last few weeks, I've given him only K2 assessment books. I was comparing the topics with the p1 textbook for Maths, they are about the same. For example, addition and subtraction, coins, time, etc.
Did not get him any P1 books, not yet. :lol: -

My son is going to P1 next week too ha! Ya, he has started doing his P1 assessments since mid K2. English is OK, let him read more to learn more vocab. so that creative writing is easier. My headache is his comprehension. Just anyhow read & attempt.. comprehension is a \"killer\". Then for chinese, I also dunno how to teach han yu ping yin, I better dun confuse him further. Maths is OK cos he everyday do do do.
