Are All Primary Schools The Same?
-
Every parent has different expectations of their children...same goes for my kids too.
With my son who is the firstborn, hubby & I have no idea whatsoever about Primary 1 and the choice of school. Sad to sayhe is the 'guinea pig'. Then, we had no information about schools. We just went for the school which is within 1km of our home.
We learn along with him and gain some experience about what SAP schools are, as well as the stress, culture & expectations. With the 2nd child, we felt that she is not suitable to be in Pei Hwa after observing her character. So we decided to register her in my former school which has an affiliated secondary school. This way, we know that we have one worry less about where she will go after PSLE.
No matter what, I plan to cement her foundation at P1/2. For eg learning Maths models earlier and getting her to read. -

Yes, there is a wealth of info on the internet (thankfully!) but many of these parents don't even surf the web to begin with....
Then they have to be introduced to kiasuparents.com lor where the resources here are free.... I do enjoy helping people solve Math & English problems here from time to time and it's free lor. :lol:jesschan:
Agree. Unfortunately, some parents do not have the resources or lack the knowledge to help their kids when they do not get the good teachers.... -
Hi Janet
We are the same too. Therefore next year when dd choose the Secondary School we have to take into the consideration of those have an affiliated JC.
Doesn’t worry too much as I’m sure your experience gain would definitely help your DD and your persistent would bring your DS to reach up to the next height. :rahrah: -
Yes, Janet. My older boy is the “guinea pig” too. Now I keep telling the younger one to build up his foundation in Chinese in lower primary when the workload is lighter.

Brenda, I wouldn't dare think too far. My mindset is such that if daughter can secure 10 years in CHIJ, the rest is up to her. In fact, if she wants to go to another secondary school, then it's fine with me. Work harder.Hi Janet

At 15/16 years of age, she should (hopefully lah) be mature enough to decide for herself whether she wants to go JC or polytechnic.
As for my son, I will continue to motivate and nag at him to get his work done...hopefully within these 2 years, his inner motivation will mature. -

chey....

Last year PSLE top scholar is from a no-name neighbourhood school. I thought that is sufficient proof that neighbourhood schools also can produce good students ?
I think in the future more and more top scholars will come from neighbourhood schools, also because the kids of PRs are much more driven compared to local kids. -
We feel so fortunate to have this website to learn more about schools, balloting etc etc. This website offers so much valuable information that I wish it existed way back then. Maybe it did, but I have no knowledge of.
Parents are kiasu, but that's because we are made to be such. Ok lah, maybe some parents are overly kiasu.sure kenna for saying this.
I heard from my hubby that he has a friend who sends his daughter to 2 kindergartens...morning session and then afternoon session in another kindy for more exposure to Mandarin. -
In my children’s kindy, there are English class (where the main teacher is English speaking and CHinese teacher comes in for a short period) and Chinese class where the form teacher is Chinese speaking. Some of the kids attend both classes ie one in AM & another in PM.
-
We can be kiasu, but not to the extent of sacrificing our kids' childhood.
We don't want our kids to accuse us of robbing them a happy childhood when they grow up. They may not be grateful to us.
Kids need to spend most of their time playing freely and daydreaming -

Yes, this site is great; I've learned so much from it and it helped me narrow down my choices of primary schools for my kids.janet_lee88:
Think this parent is extreme - poor child needs the rest!I heard from my hubby that he has a friend who sends his daughter to 2 kindergartens...morning session and then afternoon session in another kindy for more exposure to Mandarin.
