According to HCI timeline, shortlising notification will be issued betw 1st to 5th July.

Managed to get some sense of the stats from the previous posts...think i really have to spent some time combing through the almost going to 600 pages in this forum :rotflmao: :lovesite:
From the Q&A sessions, principals shared for previous years - 2000+ apply to sit for the 1st selection tests then 400+ are invited to camp. Thereafter, CO and WLs are given out for 170 places. They did not mention how many COs or WLs =>some posts in this forum Claim 150 COs and 20 WLs. If not all taken up, the extra places go to SIE phase.
This CoVid year, the school has no selection test or camp so will look through all applicants then screen for 400+ to interview. I suppose they will make the COs and WLs then. -

Dear Papalovesgirl & all who responded to my post,
My girl is also interested in NUS High, so I have did a bit of research into it. You have asked a few questions, I will try to answer them best of my knowledge.
for someone who does not have any Math Olympiad background, is it zero chance to get in NUSH ?
During the Q&A session of an NUS High Zoom session regarding admissions, this question was asked and the answer given was \"no\", in essence, they do not just look at MO or SO. They look primarily at \"interest and aptitude\", according to the teacher-in-charge, rather than the background.
From the website:
\"All Applicants are to sit for the Selection Tests on 2 July 2022, Saturday. Venue for Selection Tests (either NUS or NUS High School) will be informed by the end of June 2022 via the Main Contact Email Address filled in at MOE Centralised DSA-Sec Online Portal.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend the Selection Camp on 16 July 2022.
After Selection Camp, selected applicants may be invited to attend a Selection Interview on 26 July 2022.\"
Any case of children who is already in NUSH and got in purely based on school math/science exam results?
Yes. My friend's daughter had neither math nor science Olympiad exposure. Not all schools provide equal opportunities for MO or SO, hence students are not penalised for that.
Even if very luckily got in, wouldn't it be very stressful for someone who has totally no math Olympiad background and start from the scratch?
My understanding is that MO is not all that related to mainstream MOE maths- yes, the thinking process and all that but the subjects covered are all the same, it is not as if you miss learning new topics all together- but NUS High specific I am not so sure. I believe it is the same.
If you are concerned, after PSLE, you can send your child for training. No shortage of centres offering MO training.
If I am not wrong the intake is around 100 plus only.
Around 170
I really wish that my son can get into a school that can nurture him for his interest in math and NUSH seems to be a very good one. However, is it too unrealistic for his case? Should I drop it or give it a shot? Am I wasting one of my 3 DSA choices?
Their curriculum seems fascinating- modular, ability to do Uni modules in Year 5 or 6 for high achievers etc- and if i recall correctly, half of their teachers are Masters or PhDs. For someone passionate in Math or Science, it seems the best bet.
Alternatively there is School of Science and Technology but it appears several tiers below and gears towards preparing students for Poly rather than Uni. I might be wrong; I didn't pay much attention as I want my child to take IP or equivalent.
As for whether it is wasting one of your 3 DSA choices, it really depends on you and your child.
My child and I discussed and we decided to utilise only 2 DSA choices since if she got an offer from a 3rd school, she would not accept it as she would rather wait for her PSLE results to go for one of the 2 choices.
(Incidentally, NUS High has historically held a Supplementary Intake Exercise if they did not fill the quota during DSA.)
From the website:
\"The Supplementary Intake Exercise (SIE) is subject to vacancies available on the day of release of PSLE results. The application is open only to current P6 students who have taken the PSLE and who have not been admitted to a school through the DSA-Sec Exercise.
Selection of applicants in the SIE will be based on the PSLE results and portfolio which includes primary school academic results. Only shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a Selection Interview. Applicants with an AL score of 4 to 6 with AL 1 in both Mathematics and Science are encouraged to apply.\"
Perhaps the last line gives you a better idea of what they are looking for and better assess your son's suitability.
:thankyou:
thank you very much for taking time to share with me your views and knowledge. It is really very useful in my decision making.
Good to know that ALL DSA applicants to NUSH have to sit for the Selection Test on 2 July. At least, everyone is on equal footing when they take the same test. If first round of selection is purely based on school academic, may not be fair since primary schools may have different standards.
As for the SIE, I am surprised! with only 170 seats, having vacancies seems to be impossible. I wonder whats the stats like for no. of DSA applicants in the past? with so limited intake, yet there's unfilled quota. maybe NUSH is really stringent in their selection, only choose the best of the best.
My last concern is the distance as I''m staying northeast area at Sengkang and it is really far..hubby and I literally tried travelling via public transport MRT Sengkang- MRT Harbourfront-Bus 97, almost faint...abt 1hr 30mins..Imagine 7.30am assembly, son got to leave house at 6am!!! imagine got to stay back CCA until 7.30pm, come home already 9pm plus.. OMG.. there are other travelling alternatives but we chose this route since least walking/transferring and sheltered all the way.
In any case, this shld be the last to worry (not even sure son will get thru selection test). From what I gathered, there is school bus & boarding house for students. Despite the distance, my son told me he is ok with the travelling and after hearing all the raves & marvels abt how he cld further his interest in Mathematic, he said it is his dream school!!
I guess we can find out more during open house on 21 May.
Good luck and all the best to everyone!! :xedfingers: -
RE: NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)
for someone who does not have any Math Olympiad background, is it zero chance to get in NUSH ?
My son’s favorite subject is mathematic, he scored mostly band 1 for school Math exams (neighborhood school). He has been receiving MOE Academic Achievement award from Pri 1 to 5, got level best in Math for pri 4. It was only this year that he got some exposure to Math Olympiad as his school shortlisted him for the Raffles Institution Primary Mathematics World Contest 2022 (only sat for first round). I think those Olympiad questions look "alien"" to him and without the foundation and proper training, it was tough for him.
Pls correct me if I am wrong, i feel that all those who got into NUSH should be the Math/Science elites who are winners of Math Olympiad or at the very least received many years of training for Math Olympiad? Any case of children who is already in NUSH and got in purely based on school math/science exam results? Even if very luckily got in, wouldn’t it be very stressful for someone who has totally no math Olympiad background and start from the scratch? If I am not wrong the intake is around 100 plus only. Should I drop it or give it a shot? Am I wasting one of my 3 DSA choices? If he drop NUSH, he can DSA thru leadership in other schools. Your comment will greatly help me in my thinking process. thank you very much in advance.
