Estee, I think your memory was short lived. SG ran out of surgical masks in all local pharmacies because the PRCs bought them in cartons to send back to China. They even went to warehouses to buy up all the surgical masks. We were quite upset why our govt did not foresee the PRCs’ bulk purchases and restrict their purchases as well as impose export control.
On 10th or 12th Feb, 4 doctors sent a petition to PM Lee. Inside the letter, they agreed that surgical masks could be left for the frontline medical staff, while commoners could just use hand sewn reusable cloth masks. And that all of us should just mask up and stop mingling for 2 weeks. But we chose no masks if not sick and continues to live life as per normal.
To be honest, earlier, I was quite proud we really could go around without masks and live life as per normal!
Unfortunately we had inherent cognitive bias in thinking that it was a Wuhan virus and nothing to do with Europe or USA which led to our slow responses in closing off the borders as well as imposing strict quarantine regime on the returnees. This caused the second wave of infections that’s still inflicting us.
Agreed, we were just too complacent and reactive.
