    • When your child encounters a difficult word

When your child reads alone and when he encounters a difficult word, how does your child deal with the word?

Skip it without knowing it so as to continue with his reading but highlight it and will check the meaning later OR

Have a dictionary next to him whenever he reads so that as and when there’s any difficult word, he can find out the meaning straight away.

Or is there other way your child is doing which is useful? Do share. Many thanks.

After finding out the meaning, will he write the new difficult word on a notebook?

      Hi

What about joining a clan? Apart from Hokkien Clan, any other clan out there?

    • RE: Julia Gabriel - Community Thread

I have recently enrolled my gal to Julia Gab. for their bilingual playgroup. It’s a 2 hour programme where it’s conducted in Mandarin and English. There are 4 teachers in total. 2 for English the other 2 for Mandarin.

I have always been very keen in this biligual programme as part of the lesson is conducted in Mandarin. I must said I am very impressed by the Mandarin part especially the story telling period. It’s really animated. Though my gal couldn’t understand a single Mandarin, she was so attentive and really follow through out the story. The China teachers role played and they needn’t read from any book. As for the English bit, I’m a little disappointed. They read directly from a book and it’s rather uninteresting.

But on the whole, it’s still good and I find that my gal is trying to ‘speak’ more after attending this programme.

Compared to Growing Up Gifted, Julia Gab is slightly more pricey but I feel that the teacher at Julia Gab speaks better English and needless to say, the Mandarin is superb! Also, at JG they encourage children to speak up and be more independent.

    • RE: What is being a KiasuParent?

      Kiasu:-

      1. Just because your cousin’s children learn piano, you also want your child(ren) to learn even though they might not be interested. Worst of all, add in another one - violin lesson

      2. Having K1 lesson in 2 different place. Morning and Noon session

      3. Just because you hear say this enrichment lesson is good (thanks to media or even kiasu friend or colleages say so) you send your children there too.

      4. Before baby is born, already enroll baby for a programme age 6mth to 18mth (on waiting list) to a branded play group.

    • RE: All About Supplements for Children

If I’m not wrong, think they have the orange flavour one.

When is the ‘right’ age for a child to take that?? Thanks.

    • When your child wants this and that...

I realised children these days no longer want lollipop but ipod! What if your child want ipod or some other expensive hi tech gadget or game box/station, would you buy for them?

For those who cannot afford, how would you tell your child???

A friend of mine, simply tell her son that she has no money and will buy for him when she has the money. Luckily, her son is understanding.

    • RE: Arts & Craft materials

Try shopping at Bras Basah. Thats the place where most ART material can be found. Art Friend will be a better choice as they have many different selections! Maybe you can become a member? Can't remember how I become one but I think you can get up to 10% if I ddn't remember wrongly.

Well, children love cutting papers. And papers are so expensive!!! so perhaps to be more creative, we can always use recycle items like

      Newspaper
      Papercup
Even envelops from your daily bills and make use of those phamlets/brochures included to create a collage with your child.

At the end of the day, still a nice piece of art work 🙂

    • RE: Recommendation for children art course

wow weee just looked at ART BOOT CAMP website. Interesting and impressive website.

I love those painting done by those children. Pretty impressive for their age. Looking at what they have drawn - still life. I think they must have been taught on basic skill to achieve.

I think when it comes to choosing an art school for my child, I will consider
      - the entire environment (health and safety reason)
      - past work done by other children.
      - if at all possible, maybe some work done by the teachers as well 🙂
