wah you very good leh. I only got get free milk sample b4. but then when DS was baby, I got price of diapers in excel spreadsheet to figure out which one most value for $$$...

That's a neat idea about the excel spreadsheet.
One more thing about those diapers, can you suggest me a good diaper bag? I'm thinking about getting a new one, maybe one of https://easytobemom.com/best-diaper-bags-that-you-will-love/, all I want is big-sized pockets, but I can't choose the right one :lightrod: There are just so many of them. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Depends on your needs I think - are you bringing along milk bottles or are you going to breastfeed? (Different paraphernalia either way.) Do you drive when you go out, or do you have to bring along many spare diapers? Etc.

I have a version of the Skip Hop chevron, which does have big pockets and isn't too bulky. It isn't the roomiest bag, though probably fine for one kid. Tbh, I've also used a normal backpack (harder to find things in), a normal large tote, and now I often use one of those free cloth bags - so any bag that you find comfortable would work. I organize things (e.g. diapers, extra clothes, milk supplies) in large ziploc bags.

What do you use for bagging rubbish, especially food scraps if not plastic bags?

I think we cannot run away from using plastic bags. But the argument is that there are far too many being handed out these days, more than are really needed. Also, I think many families don't need the full-size supermarket bags for rubbish every day and could use smaller ones, or reuse bread bags, produce bags etc instead. In countries where plastic bags are not handed out free, most people buy rolls of trash bags from supermarkets (which would cost less than the 10 cents per bag NTUC proposes to charge). This has the benefit of people being able to use thinner bags of the appropriate size for their needs which reduces the amount of materials consumed. Mainly, if everyone would just reduce their use as far as possible (not necessarily to zero), that would really help.

I guess it would reduce the amt of material consumed if the bags came in different sizes and people used the appropriate size - but then I already use different sizes of free plastic bags for different needs. I'm not sure having to buy plastic bags (esp if they're v cheap) rather than use free plastic bags would really cut down the total amt of plastic consumed. That would require different garbage disposal methods I think - e.g. in-sink food disposal to reduce the need for plastic bags to throw away food waste.

The thing I need plastic bags most for is diapers! Though I guess there are always cloth diapers, like in the old days.

    • RE: Me Time!

Yah to have the choice at all is definitely a blessing. I actually have a very flexible job now - I can be home at five and do the evening/bedtime routines with the kids and then get back to work at night (flexible is not part-time). Looked at it one way, it's perfect. Looked at it another way, I feel like I'm putting in part-time hours in two full-time jobs (work and parenthood) and just barely scraping through for each - this would work for someone more organized or more hardworking (so that me time at night is really work time), but I can't compete with the people who put in the hours in the office and at night, and I'm basically just hustling the kids through dinner/bath/bedtime each night.

Edited to add: but it is a better deal than a lot of FT working parents, I know. I'm trying to have it all, and this might be as good as it gets (at least until the contract ends!). 🙂

    • RE: Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools

Thanks for the responses! Definitely a lot to think about. You’ve articulated some of my concerns in feeling demoralized at being in the "lower" or less-resourced classes - of course there’s no guarantee that the kid will be near the top in a non-GEP school, but that seems a little different to me. On the other hand yes, it’s a life skill to be confident in one’s own abilities, and I think the kid would do okay in a more challenging environment. (I mean, how do I tell? she’s doing fine in childcare, but it’s a small, friendly, HDB void deck-type of childcare centre - probably not an accurate gauge for primary school.)

Might be a bit late for PSLE this year, but I found this (accidentally) on how to take good notes. It's more for older kids, but just in case it's useful: https://theconversation.com/whats-the-best-most-effective-way-to-take-notes-41961

Nice to have one-on-one time with your DD2. 🙂

I think the grass is always greener? My contract is up soon and I have to look for a new job, and I always think - maybe I should just not bother and stay home with my kids while they are little??

    • RE: Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools

I’ve a question on choosing primary schools. What are the advantages of going to a GEP school from P1? Are there any? (Apart from the kid not having to change schools if they get into GEP, because that’s a bit unlikely lah.) We could send the kid to a GEP school in phase 2A, but the school is kinda far away and in the wrong direction. (The school is not NYPS, if that makes a difference. :p)

My me time on the weekends is washing dishes and doing the laundry - DH and I toss for it. On the bright side, the dishes have never been so promptly washed as before we had kids. (My me time on the weekdays is work…)
