janet_lee88:MOE doesn't allow PH to get gifted program bcos there are several schools in Bukit Timah who already have it...furthermore, gifted kids are just a small percentage. Instead, PH is given the go-ahead by MOE to specialize in Maths and Science.
GEP is not a good programme, MOE knows that. Unfortunately, they can't simply remove it...they need a new, darling minister to do that.... the time will come....markfch:
A significant percentage leave PH for schools with gifted classes each year...then PH will groom the next group of kids to 'replace' those who left.
In that case then I agree with php's suggestion that PH should re-apply for GEP programme. Read in earlier threads that PH implemented GEP programme before. Maybe previous implementation not so successful?

Actually most of the kids in schools with gifted classes are from Pei Hwa...a friend told me that. That's why PH principal is annoyed that she faces a brain drain at the end of P3 every year.
Then she should ask MOE for GEP status ...parents will save a lot of hassle in transfering school when the time comes...Jennifer:
By P2, her then FT hand picked few potential kids from the class to attend his 'special' maths lesson to train on 'out-of-text' questions
Maybe this is the GEP preparation class, hence no wonder the sch produces quite a few GEP eligible candidates every year.
I wonder whether PH has this scheme. -

besides him, there were also a few scholars in my class....too bad i was the next in line and i missed it....anyway, majority in my class did well. but i learnt a good lesson...you don't have to do well academically in order to do well in life....My friends and I (those non-scholars) are in retiring mode now but those scholars are still working very hard...haha...out of 40 students, slightly less than 30 of them are still in contact including a few of our teachers....can't imagine it, we knew each other since the 70s.php:
me too, almost sent my dd there becos BTPS was my ex-school and just a stone throw away from my place. very least, BTPS produced a president scholar before. i knew becos he was my classmate.
Haha, did your mum ask you why not you instead? Keke. -

then i wonder why everyone seems to use BTPS as second choice. Also the intake each year looks miserable...not even 100%
BTPS was my first choice until PH accepted my PV apln. I only sent one PV apln letter so mind was more or less set for ds to go BTPS. Was convinced by my ex-colleague whose 2 DDs are studying there that BTPS is a reasonably good sch. He said that BTPS is more or less united nations and due to the affluence of the area, students are mostly of 'good' background.
My friend is quite the fussy & kiasu type. So I was convinced that if it's good enough for him, it'll be good enough for me too. Actually in a way it's a pity that a sch who produces so many good students at lower pri stands to lose the best of them at GEP. -

That's a good comic to get. I bought it too.
Hi Markfch,comfy:
Hehe, guess I'm also one of those parents against comics, plus ds never reads the same story twice. It must be a totally new story to incentivise him to read.
I'm trying to quickly move him away from picture to non-picture books (so comics is a no-no for me). I think non-picture books tend to deal with more mature concepts which requires deeper thoughts & analysis.
Just to share with you this incident. When her CL teacher noticed her reading this comic 歇后语我OK (little dragon), she recommended this book to the whole class. My DD and her friend even thought out of the idea of acting out the characters among themselves. It is very funny as it is a comedy comic.
Just a note .. the school do not allow non-academic comics (if there is such a term
) So comics like batman, superman, pokemon or dragonball are still not allowed.
School library does carry some comics too.....Tin Tin is very popular....I did my PV in the library, so managed to learn something there....

That is a state land but unlikely it will be used as holding school. The most likely location is at Toh Tuck, next to Bukit Timah Primary School. MOE has used this location for holding school for many years...RGPS used that many years ago too....But now there is a new location available, previous ITE Clementi....just a street across Bukit Timah boundary which i don't think the school will consider....There is an international school behind Bt Timah CC, think it is Canadian International Sch.
I was on a bus going to Boon Lay the other day and passed by a construction site for Canadian International Sch.
Anyone aware if the current site of the sch is govt owned land? Just thinking aloud whether it is possible for the sch campus to be used as a holding site for govt sch in the MOE sch upgrading programme. -

markfch, thanks...if you don't mind, must really take a look.....i have people going over to china every month, can get them to carry back....books are very cheap there, can really save alot....
hi clueless (joking joking  )php:
Trapwithin/markfch, what is 四五快读? clueless...
四五快读 is a series of 7 books popularily used by PRC parents to teach their pre-schooling kids about CL reading. Hence the words 四五cos it's suppose to be for 4-5 yrs old kids.
Since locally our CL standard is nowhere as good, it's equivalent to our 8-9 yrs old standard. It is supposed to contain 80% of the common words that is used by children's storybooks. These books are not easy. Parents have to possess a basic standard of CL in order to teach their kids. At book 3, I have to resort to using the dictionary to learn a couple of the unfamiliar words (no hanyu pinyin).
My gut feel is that if a kid can master all the words in this series by P1, that means the foundation is strong and lower pri HCL will be a breeze. I can show you a few of these books this coming Sat if you're curious.
All thanks to Tamarind's recommendation, she is really a gem. -

I'm also using 四五快读 for my ds after strong recommendation from Tamarind. The only issue I find with this series is that they are not in story form, more like pages after pages of individual words. So if a kid is reluctant to read chinese initially, it would not be surprising to see the kid resist 四五快读 more.markfch:

I was reading through the Si Wu Kuai Du material recommended by Tamarind in the other thread. I think the scaffolding is pretty good and believe my dd can still benefit from it.
Though this series do not have a direct impact on their HCL academic result but I hope it will stimulate the interest in reading CL books.
You might want to start that with your 4 yr old

I think we can vote E3 as the President of PHPPS KSP Club....haha...so resourceful and plenty things to learn from her...
I can :dancing: now. CL paper I is over!
Have a great weekends, everyone!
I am so nice to you, how could you? We've the same number of kids so you understand me the best, I am a busy mum...

php, no way...
you are too flattering...I am equally good at delegating...don't force me to say out the name...
Yes, IJJ....am so glad papers 1 are over, no wonder I see a 180 degrees shift in php's feelings in this forum that he could start sabotaging people...
My load's off too cos the remaining papers are somehow more predictable, unlike the compositions.
Still...I wish all our kids all the best and persevere on. Last hurdle left! :rahrah: :rahrah:
E3, ya true... my feelings shifted 180 degrees....but my silly dd shifted faster than me... 360 degrees...yesterday during EL1 paper.... once she heard her teacher to max 11 sentences in their writing before the exam start...., she immediately dumped what she has learnt in creative writing class completely and shifted to safe writing.....when i heard that, i didn't know whether to cry or to laugh.......so funny... my little girl....
