RE: 2010 DSA(Direct School Admission)
HyperKiasu:
Once you are successful in DSA, the school will take you in so long as you meet their stated cut-off criteria in PSLE, which in most cases is an aggregate allowing you to be in Express stream.a quick question here, appreciated parents advice:
If kids (mainstream) unexpectedly underperformed in PSLE, say PSLE only score 240, will they still be taken by the school (whose COP is about 260) because he/she already DSAed? :?
In short, yes, even if your child scores 240, so long as he has been confirmed a place via DSA, he will be accepted. -

angelee998:
Yes, however today she received her maths paper and her score was 60/100. Her Science is borderline 80 also, and the school has not added the portfolio results to the overall yet. Therefore, what I would like to know now are her possibilites of going for the GAT and still being accepted to RGS. Are there any bad impressions left on the interviewers if my girl has to take the GAT?
If your dd clears GAT and is called for an interview, her chances are as good as any of the others who were called for the interview without GAT. I know personally of GEPpers who had to go for GAT and then the interview. Some got accepted, some didn't. So it really depends on how she performs at the interview. -
RE: School Placement Exercise for returning S'porean children
hoskins8h:
Thanks for the info.[If you have exemption due to learning disability for MT, then it's illogical to take HCL at O level. Some returning Singaporeans are pretty weak in MT and exemption is natural. For some others, while the child may cope, the child may be at a disadvantage due to not having the local learning support, eg suitable tuition, Chinese lang media exposure. Even kids who attend international schools in China may be weak in Chinese as the schools may cater to an international crowd and treat Chinese as enrichment subject.
My older child is taking HCL in secondary school. As I mentioned, one returnee exempted MT made a successful appeal to be admitted to HCI at sec 1. Going through SPERS, 3rd lang option is not given, but I think if you appeal, can get it. -
RE: School Placement Exercise for returning S'porean children
hoskins8h, if you are exempted from CL at PSLE, can you take HCL in Secondary School? Iβm wondering because I know if you are exempted from CL at PSLE due to a learning disability, you will not be permitted to take HCL nor 3rd language in Secondary School. Is it different for returning overseas students?

Solar Cooker is the first year for this Science assignment. Heard last year was a different assignment on cells and membranes? The Tic Tac toe fairy tale english assignment should not be new leh. The worksheet seems to have started since 2007 (footer sstated fairy tales/term2/geo/2007) Maybe your child completed without you knowing? -

I am curious how you got to know the mean score of SCGS. This is something we parents have always wanted to find out but with little success. -
RE: Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) [*IP]
red rose:
Dear Turquoise,
You have misunderstood some parts of my sharing. I did NOT say 113 is the top class. Notice I used the words 'so-called'. I am only sharing what I do know for a fact -- Many mainstream classes have been given that information from their teachers themselves. I don't know why the teachers chose to reveal that. Perhaps your dd is in a GEP class, which is why the teachers may not be comfortable sharing this info.? To minimise competition? The pupils from that class in question have apparently also been told exactly the same thing from their form teachers.
If you had read the first part of my post carefully, I made it clear that I view all the girls equally and with respect. I do not think it is important to differentiate them further academically too, as all of them are very bright. I was sharing just for interest sake - perhaps, I should not have. It is nothing personal at all !
Dear red rose,
Thank you for sharing your nuggets of information. It was interesting reading for the most part. I just didn't see the point in highlighting that 113 is the so-called top class. Indeed, why is there this fascination with which are the better classes, which are the GEP classes etc? Do the students in these classes get more opportunities? Do they do a different syllabus from the other classes? If that is the case, I would be interested to learn more.
I am surprised that the teachers would tell the girls which is the top class, if there is one. If indeed the teachers of \"many mainstream classes\" did tell their classes that 113 is the top class, then I stand corrected. Perhaps parents of students from 113 and the other classes would like to confirm/correct this, based on whether their children have actually heard this statement from their teachers. -

Not exactly...there are high scorers in other classes and there are < 270 in these classes too
Seriously, I feel that it is pointless to discuss which class has the better students . They are all high ability girls and we shouldn't view them differently from the classes they are in.
I have stated what I know to set the records straight.
Let me help by sharing what I know just for interest sake. I agree that we should not view these girls differently as they are all talented in their own areas.
109-113 are 'reserved' for GEP pupils and high scoring mainstreamers.
Of the GEPpers, many entered via DSA - Hence, there are a handful with scores below 270 and some even below 260. They are put in these classes as long as their primary school GEP status as been 'renewed' and extended to 'secondary GEP status'. This is decided by the GEP branch of MOE after the PSLE, taking into account their PSLE scores (ideally above 250) and their attitude and performance during their 3 years in primary GEP. There are a rare few GEP pupils who did not fulfil the criteria for secondary GEP status and are in classes outside 109-113.
As for the mainstreamers, the 'cut-off' score for entry into these 'GEP' classes varies from year to year. For this present batch, I believe it is about 272/3 ??
I believe most classes have been told by their teachers that 113 is the so-called top class, although not all the top PSLE scorers are there. This is probably based on the class average PSLE scores (about mid 270s) and not on individual top scores per se. There are a handful below 270 in that class, but almost half scored 275 and above too, hence bringing up the overall average.
:celebrate:
It is incorrect to say that 113 is the top class. The class comprises students who take MEP, AEP and students strong in Math Olympiads. Not all of these students scored >270. There are students in 113 who scored <260.
I also do not know of any of the classes being told that by their teachers that 113 is the top class either. The average of the students in 113 may be high, but so are the averages of some of the other classes.
In any case, why does it matter? PSLE is in the past and the girls all do the same syllabus regardless of which class they are in. -

ningy:
thanks, Mathsparks. Just had the meet the Parents session with my dd1's form teacher. when I asked her if she can prepare a testimonial if the DSA school requested for it; she went \"hahaha ! why go thru DSA if ur daughter can do well in PSLE then she can get into any school she wants...... testimonial is just a standard pc of thing that is not useful at all !\" I was quite upset that she's not supportive at all and left after 5 mins 'cos her next comment was : \"I have no issues/complaints abt ur daughter and I believe u have nothing to ask me.\" :x
Hi ningy, I can understand your frustration with the form teacher. However, testimonials aren't absolutely necessary for DSA applicaton and some primary schools actually have a blanket rule that no testimonials will be given. So you dd won't really be at a disadvantage. -
RE: Secondary School Third Languages

Each school has its own policy. Is it decided by MOE or the individual schools, whether to take in 3rd lang test marks into the total % or GPA calculation ?
I have heard in HCI and DHS, the students can choose to take in or not to take in the test marks of 3rd lang into their end of year % calculation. Is it true ? :? -

RE: GEP 2010 - Screening & Selection
Blobbi:
Tks Turquoise. Do you know what they do on screening day?
If I remember correctly, the questions are Math and English-based, and pitched at a slightly higher standard than syllabus.
The test is conducted over two days. One day is for English and General Ability. Other day is for Math and General Ability.turquoise:
Hi vlim,
How come the selection test is on 2 days? You mean it's a different day for different schools? -
