Ask to see how their lessons are structured, and decide what you like better. You can ask about the teacher assigned to the class you intend to register for, but they will usually only know if the class is already up and running.

TWC : The Write Connection, have a few branches

I would like to know more too. Anyone with experience? My child is weak in compo. Wanted to sign up forTWC but there were not available slots at the branch near us. So I just signed up TLL. My impression is TWC is doing solely compo. TLL is doing both papers…

Tried both TLL and TWC before but found 1-1 tutor is much better. Looking back, I think it’s silly to have a group class for Compo as each child has his own creativity & ideas, therefore it needs a tailored approach. -

Hi sorry she is no longer giving 1-1 tuition as she has found a full-time teaching position in a private school.
Hi Zac’s mum,

Thanks Zac’s mum. I am doing a trial class at TWC. Saw Writers studio at beauty world. Not sure anyone has any feedback?
Btw, if anyone looking at TLL for compo, I think you should explore somewhere. -
By the way, I can share a bit about the method that the 1-1 tutor used. The best thing she did for my son was that she made him plan out the story on his own first. Every single week. This is what the group classes lack. I realized that they brainstorm as a group. So my son (and many other kids) would take the easy way out & let the other kids throw in suggestions. Eventually if the brainstorming stagnates, the teacher has to move on due to lack of time & she ends up spoonfeeding the kids with the plot, the words, the ending, etc. This happens in schools too. So many kids never get trained in writing their own compo. Come exam time, they falter due to the lack of individual training.
Once the child can plan out the Compo himself, and if language skills are already good, u can move on to getting him to flesh out his story with metaphors, similes, figurative speech etc etc etc (videos teaching all such tools can be found on You Tube). Eg.

And by the way, P5 and P6 Compo is different from P1-4 Compo in the sense that the 3 given pictures are no longer sequential. The kids just need to use ONE of the pictures and tie it in with the given topic. Lots more room for creativity. So I won’t worry too much if they don’t score too well in P1-4 Compo. It counts for nothing much since the game changes come PSLE prep. -
Hi Zac’s mum, thanks for sharing.

Totally agree with zac’s mum on the 2 important points.
We came to the same conclusions when we were trying to figure out how to improve. The teacher we used did not even use 4 pictures even for the lower Pri kids. She also said forget about the 4 pictures as there is no story creation but just a listing of what we see from pictures. So when kids go upper Pri, many don’t know how to storytell.
Our P2 and P5 kids were given the 3 pictures and 1 topic right from day 1 and guided to creatively spin ideas! It was a total eye opener.
And she did not give long list of helping words/vocab at first or lots of questions for kids to answer. I realise mine depended too much on questions.
Kids must start with something, anything and then she showed kids how to improve every idea from a cliche plot to something more interesting,. Then when they are stronger, she taught them how to add a twist! So we were all surprised that our serious kid actually had a dry sense of humour.
One thing she also did was made the students write a draft 2, even draft 3 sometimes. I love this part. A lot of hard work, not just for the kids but for teacher. So I appreciated her a lot because can tell from the comments she really tried to change kids’ thinking. Draft 2 must think to do, as they are not the corrections or copying model Compo like in CL tuition.
My girl who was reluctant at first grew so confident by 3rd week.
If your kid is willing to work, I don’t see how he or she cannot improve. -
