    • RE: Real reason behind Singapore’s obsession with tuition

      Hi Optimistforum,

I am referring to the 'English Language and Intelligence books from the UK, 50s and 60s'. Where can I get those books?

What are the Singaporean assessment books that you find them good ad useful? Care to share?

      TIA.

      Hi Melodies

By books, I meant current Singaporean assessment books. Also, English Language and Intelligence books from the UK, 50s and 60s.

      Hi Optimistforum,

Those are the books that I have been looking for! Care to share here?

      TIA

Well, at the end of the day our kids will benefit from the investment in their education - and that is all that matters.

That being said, I have given my kids a week off work; no doubt they are slowing down in school too, as exams were in May and the school year finishes in July.

As always, I have learned a lot from my Kiasu posters; I also have tips and book tips to share should you need my help. My books are mostly Singaporean assesment books or Englsih and Intelligence books from England, from the good old 50s and 60s.

    • RE: Former SCDF and CNB chiefs arrested

How can it be Gay's wife exposed the affair? This ex-CNB chief's wife appeared in court with him and show the whole world that she is standing by him and even told reporter that she believed in him.

      friendship:
Most probably ah Gay's own wife exposed the affair after she gathered enough evidence.
After rebuking the affair, instead of being remorseful, Gay challenged the wife.

Being childless, no need to think about TLL, TAS and all sort of enrichment programmes, his wife prepared to let go everything to bring down this man's reputation.

The saddest person is Gay's mum. Raising the son eventually fell off in the hands of women. Luckily, last time, education no need to invest so much. This guy could be top PSLE student and 9 straight A1s in O level. At that time there was no GEP or IP schools.

    • RE: different punishment for similar offence - why?

Would it be the case was just uncovered now but not 6 yrs ago?

      Angelight:
DH and I were discussing abt this case and he said that maybe, just maybe, that the sentencing judge's wifey may have been a client of WW and tells her husband not to pass too harsh a sentence??? :siam:

But seriously, for this case to happen in 2006 and sentenced only 6 yrs later is quite unusual (most cases take a couple of yrs to sentence)...this \"wolfman' really know pple in high places.

    • RE: Primary school maths: A vicious circle (from TODAY May 8)

I agree that it is a vicious circle. Now, working parents can’t cope with studying to learn the concept and technique and then teach our kids but have to resolve to signing up more tuition for our kids…

      Hi jtoh,

Thanks for letting me know this.

You mentioned about IP is suitable for some students but not for others.
Could you share with us IP is exactly suitable for which type of students?
How relevant is this IP to this type of student?

The pupil who scored > 265 is a very bright kid, independent and has never attended any tuition but still can't excel in IP. I don't know what type of student can excel in IP school then.

Agree! you will never know if you don't try. If your kids score well > 260 for PLSE, you will think they are OK for IP, right?

Don't forget that you need to be at least 250 for IP school admission!

I know a real case of 1 pupil who scored >265 for PLSE and got into RI for IP route. However, he struggled to cope in RI and just managed to get average result for A level.

      Imami:

But how would parents know if IP is/is not suitable for their children?

My child is still very young, so I don't really know about IP although my niece and nephew (a pair of twins) are IP students.

      Hi optimistforum,

Are you currently working in MOE? Just wonder why you will soon be involved in the review of the National Curriculum.

Why you can see our education back to its best within ten years ( I think you are referring to going back to O level route?) If this is the case, why you think this will create a demand for more private tuition? I don't recall we have so many tuition centres during my time and there were not many pupils who attended tuition during my time. Could you clarify more?
      TIA!

      limlim:
So what is MOE going to do about it? sit by and do nothing?

Don't complain too much! I remembered there was a time when people complained about our education system is so ‘tian ya shi' aka spoon-fed system and killed off creativity of our pupils. Smart Alex in MOE then came up the system of Eng. Stella program, etc.lala. programs in primary with an objective of learn thru playing. Since then, the school didn't teach much grammar and hence we parents (working parent got little time to teach our kids or unable to teach) have to subscribe tuition for our kids. It also helps to create a \"black market' for teachers to give 'tuition' :siam:

Ironically, they came up the IP system for secondary bright pupils. Guessed what? There are getting more and more IP pupils take 'o\" level paper as a private candidate. These private candidates have to attend tuition for 'o' level subjects too. I once asked a few parents (whose girls took 'O' level paper') for the reasons of taking o level and it defeats the purpose of taking IP route. I was told that those pupils did 'o' level are well-prepared for the 'A' level paper. They wanted their kids to prepare for their A level. Ultimately, it is 'A' level that counts and enables them to get into the university! :faint: O level route seems to be a better route, why change in the first place? See how failure is this IP program and how stressful is the pupil nowadays! :stupid:
