RE: All about Transferring to Other Primary Schools
My children Pri 4 (AM Session) & Pri 2 (PM session) are currently studying in a SAP school which offers Higher Chinese. We plan to move to our new house at Punggol in August this year. The distance between the new address to the current school is relatively far. There is no direct bus to the school hence it is extremely inconvenient for me esp when kiddos got enrichment lessons or extra curriculum activities when school bus do not ferry. In addition, the current school bus is charging very high fare for the new route ($80 vs $160 per child). So I am having thoughts of transferring them to a new school @ punggol, Punggol Cove Primary which will only be open in year 2016. Frankly I am quite incline to transfer them to the new school as I prefer a school that emphasize on character building rather than result oriented. In addition, I think it will be rather torturous for my kids to have to wake up so early daily because of the move.
However, I have concern about the Higher Chinese that my kids will be losing out. I remember during my secondary school days we have Additional Math and Elementary Math and we can take the better grades when enrolling for JC. So does Pri school Higher Chinese work the same way? Is there a separate paper for Higher Chinese for PSLE? Or do all children take the same Chinese paper? From what I understand there will be banding for Pri 5 so my Pri 4 can still choose for the band with higher Chines (even if the new school is NOT a SAP school) e if she gets in the Punggol school right?
Since the school will only open in year 2016, what should I do now? This move will affect my no. 3 who will be turning P1 in 2017. Really hope you guys out there can share with me what are your views and thoughts if you were me? TIA. -

RE: mooncakes
Jennifer:
Jen, the sch did not specify 1 box...just said contributions of mooncakes and pomelos..erm...no collection box leh; my kid gotta hand over the items to CL teacherAdmummy:
thks for this recommendation.. $20+ per box seems quite reasonable
Ask you this ah: did the school letter state each pupil has to contribute ONE box of mooncakes?
I am thinking of just giving one piece. Can always repackage in those SKP square box, then wrapped up nicely to give to the school.
I remember in my boys' pri sch, there was a big box outside the general office for mooncake collections - no one will know who gives which box.

Hi,my children's sch having Mooncake Festival celebration soon, parents asked to contribute mooncakes for the event..wondering if parents here got any recommendations that suit this event?
Last week I saw a promotion by Bee Cheng Hiang 3 boxes for $60+ (was it $65 for 3 boxes?). I don't know whether they still have this promotion or not. Is it within your budget?
jennifer..personally i prefer snowskin mooncake than traditional kind ...but snowskin more troublesome must chill before eating than nice so sch may not have such \"facilities\".. -
RE: mooncakes
Jennifer:
Agree..esp in my case need to folk out $ for 3 boxes; pocket burnt a hole...so was thinking how to strike bal between presentable yet economical..hoping parents here got some lobangs to recommend? Was thinking towards the line of breadtalk, bangawan, etc which are more 大众化..hesitating abt neighbourhood bakery. .of course I wouldn't mind eating that (some taste better than branded ones) just not sure abt the response from the school/parents attending event..*headache*Admummy:

Mooncakes are not cheap these days. I doubt other parents will be buying the hotels' grade ones. -

RE: Club SAHM
jjxy mum:
I need some comments from mummies here..
1) anyone regretted staying at home taking care of the family?
two years back, I took one big step, quit my job of 8 years and become a SAHM for my three children. Sometimes when I'm driven to the wall (like when I teach my no.2 math), I will doubt whether I've made the right choice? Would start to doubt my ability? Am I a lousy teacher? Wouldn't it be better if I stay employed, at least I can use my salary to get professional tutors to teach them? There were times when I see how independent kids with FTWM behave, I also wondered whether I've made the right choice as a SAHM...but most of the time, I'm feeling thankful and grateful that I can have the chance to be a SAHM, at least my children feel loved and cared for and they really love me dearly...being SAHM also enable me to do many things that I've never even thought about it while I was busy chasing the corporate ladder back then..like baking, cooking, learning ukulele and even taking up driving & then passing the driving test (hallelujah)!
2) your children behavior/personality and academic result improve greatly by you staying at home?
academic wise yes...definitely improved with my personal couching...
behavior wise...well, I feel that I am not doing a great job...I still need tips on how to make them self-motivated, assertive and positive...
maybe I drill them too much academically, esp. my no.2 ds...now I regretted it, coz he has become extremely low self-esteem and not daring to try...I wish I can turn back the clock and take things at his pace...my mistake is using my no. 1 dd as a benchmark for his progress...different children got different milestone but back then I was too eager to success..being SAHM is one of the killer stone...I am worried that people will judge my capability as a SAHM...so I wanted my children to excel in their result...my no. 1 dd was bright but not no.2 ds...now I can only \"reconstruct\" him slowly concentrating on building his confidence first....
my tip to you is that you must be very discipline, work out a time and goal plan (no need to specific coz things are very unpredictable at home) on coaching your child and stick to it diligently, once the child get use to the momentum then u got it all set up...
3) do u allocate 1-2hr daily routine for coaching your kids?
yes, everyday homework first, then prepare spelling tingxie for the following week, then do homework from enrichment classes, then do assessment book...
4) how do u do budgeting for household expenses? Or no need?
hubby and I worked out many household expenses spreadsheet before I quit my job...wanna see whether his salary can afford the expenses...once I quit my job, I no time to keep track of the expenses already...what we do is to set aside only one credit card solely for groceries and spending...so if that month when hubby kbkp then I will watch my spending the next month...
good luck to you.. -
