    • RE: Reasons to ask your maid to leave

i sent my 1st maid (a transfer) directly to the police station after having her for 10 wks when we discovered we lost a lot of things and some money here and there. The things she stole was enough to fill up a big takashimaya paper bag! I just packed her luggage including all that she stole from us. She didnt put up a fight nor cry.

Agency initially asked me to pick another maid but I insisted on making a police report. Long story short, she was jailed 6 weeks and during her jail term, she was hopsitalised 2 nights. The bill cost me $ 1700+. At the end of it, we still had to buy her single way plane tix home!!!

EPIC: I met her previous employer at police station. She told me her MIL in coma died from dehyration 2 wks after my maid was transferred out. Apparently the maid didnt feed the old lady! Imagine this ex-employer just sent the maid back to agency for a new replacement.

You have done all of us a good deed . :thankyou:
My friend told me , we can actually blacklist the maid at mom website . This will prevent them coming back to Singapore .

It was 6 yrs ago now. I will try to dig up the old files of her WP and blacklist her. It wasnt just simple stealing issue here that I sent my maid to police. I found 10 knives hidden in her luggage!

I complained so much about the maid until my mother asked me to go write a book :slapshead:

:stompfeet: Imagine if we had any fierce confrontation with her, she might killed us in the night with 1 of the 10 knives!

    • RE: Comparing Enrichment Programme versus Private Tutor

I used to prefer tuition centre. If your kids are idependent and smart, then tuition centre will work. Kids will get exposure to different types of materials and worksheets. But if your kid like DD1 needs more attention, small group home-based tuition works for her. We will be able to call the tutor directly when we want to know DD1’s progress or if we have any question on Maths problem, we can text or call the home-based tutor. We cant do that with Tuition centre tutors, there is hardly any interaction at all.

    • RE: Travel: Taiwan - Taipei

Hi! Can anyone recommend a good minsu to stay in Yilan and a convenient place to stay in Taipei, preferably near to railway station? Thanks!

heehee...Can you recognise this Minsu in Yilan? It is rather popular in Taiwan Idol Show. The website is kot.hotweb.com.tw and booking telephone number +886 911 020 007 There are many Minsu in Yilan. Some are really nice. The only issue is budget.

For Taipei, if it is your 1st time, then I think you can stay at Ximending area or Taipei Main Station. This is where we will be staying ..... http://www.cityinn.com.tw/ But it is probably too late to book for Dec Trip.
You can use http://www.tripadvisor.com/ and see the reviews of different hotels in order to decide where to stay.

We are going to Taiwan for 16 days :moneyflies: in end Nov. F&E. :boogie:

    • RE: Australia in December

If your trip is in Nov, I think Gold Coast is a better choice if your kids are ready for most of the rides… You can spend some time at the beach during this time.

Melbourne is our favorite place of the 3 too. We chose to go Melbourne during winter time so that we stayed 4D3N at Mt Buller. It is ski resort area. Also if you do plan Mt Buller for your next Winter trip, go during the Open Winter Festive. They have a big celebration with warm wine, Fireworks and performances. 4D3N is just nice. Anything less than that is too short for the kids.

There are really many fun ways to teach our little ones and Flashcard is just 1 way.

I am very pro on flashcards. I do know some parents are not but I AM.

DD2 is 6 now. DD2 was 16 months when we started flashcards. Over the years, I made more than 2000 flashcards. I spent 4-5 hrs every Fri day for years to make those cards.

I didnt do the flashcards to impact knowledge and I flash the A5 size cards really FAST so that she can remember the images and to focus (on what I was showing her). I flashed 2X 200-300 cards each day. Each topic set 8-10 cards.

I did topics like Things in Pink, Let's go for Holidays (so I had pictures of luggage, Airport, Aeroplane, Australia Map, Koala, etc), DD2's Family (we have pictures of Grandparents, Uncles and cousins...finally a baby picture of her). Many topics but nothing too difficult.

It came 1 point that she would remember the next card because I only flash the cards in 1 order.

Today....she is very focused on whatever she is doing and has mega memory. Because it was easy for her to remember what her teachers had taught her, she learns Hanyu Pinyin and can read around 5yrs old. She also enjoys school very much and teachers have commented on her progress positively.

We were not as experienced with DD1 pri4/10 yrs old. It takes a lot of my energy to coach DD1 now on her schoolwork.

So you are not Kiasu to start early. You are only making her life easier later in her early school life.

      Have fun !

You are simply amazing! 2x200-300 flash cards per day??!! I could hardly get my daughter to sit through a set of 5 cards. Like you, I'm pro flash cards, but like what autumnbronze mentioned above, my baby may not be quite as pro flash cards like me. I've a few questions:

(1)May I ask if you only flashed pictures? Or do you include written words as well?
      (2) How long does a set of 200-300 cards take you? Did you have to train your daughter gradually to sit through so many cards? How many cards did you start with for your initial sessions?
      (3) How did you get your daughter to focus on the cards? That means not looking anywhere else, not going anywhere else.

I think that the training (fast flashing of flash cards) you gave your younger daughter since young has made a big impact on her brain development --- and accounts for her ease of learning in school now. I'm definitely heartened to know that I'm not starting too early with my baby.

      @autumnbronze thanks 🙂
@SofiaWeeHeehee Amazing you said! I am amazed myself too. All my Friday nights for years after my girls went to bed were spent doing the cards! This was my passion!

      (1)
I used only picture cards. No words at all unless it is a word set. I google to find the pictures or cut them out from books/posters/magazine.
I will paste photos of animals we took on zoo trip, for shapes, I cut shapes from different color papers and stick on the cards. I also pasted pictures on the card to tell stories etc.

Topics I have done before includes:
      a)\tDifferent types of shapes
      b)\tAnimals in the zoo
      c)\tA-Z, a-z
      d)\tTypes of Vegetables
      e)\tMummy’s favorite dresses
f)\tGuess Who…..I cut pictures of her favorite characters like Barney, the 1st picture maybe the purple tail, 2nd picture, the word “Guess Who”, the 3rd picture, with a barney picture, we screamed “Barney” together….for this, I did a few common characters likely Micky, Minnie, Hello Kitty etc
g)\tEarly Morning…I pasted pictures of sun, waking up from bed, brushing teeth, breakfast, school bus, school, study etc
      h)\tThings you can find in a mall…
i)\tThings you can find in kitchen…
      j)\tEverything RED, Everything BLUE
k)\tCountries in Asia/Europe – for this you can do the flags/map (shape of country). Or just the flags or just the countries.
      l)\tOpposite – long/short, far (a small Tree pic)/near (a big Tree pic) etc

      (2) How long does a set of 200-300 cards take you? Did you have to train your daughter gradually to sit through so many cards? How many cards did you start with for your initial sessions?
Remember we flash the cards to the kids for them to to capture the images, NOT to impact knowledge. You have to do very fast, so you must knows your cards well. Always flash in 1 order only. We usually do each session in 20-30min. I just did it all at 1 time regardless whether if she was attentive or not. Sometimes we would have a lousy night when she did not want to listen, its ok.

For the day, I trained my helper to do it. For the night, usually around 8pm…I would do it. Try to do the flashcards at the same timings every day. You need to have many cards in order to be effective. Otherwise it will be very boring for them. A5 size is the best size to use. Don’t get too thin cards because it will difficult to flash/hold.

      (3) How did you get your daughter to focus on the cards? That means not looking anywhere else, not going anywhere else.
Haha I was lucky. She was very focused after a few months. We did it every night from 16 months till 4 yrs 7 months. I told my hubby 1 night “I quit” …I was truly tired! By then she can read already so we move on to books and other activities.

Please dont do difficult cards. Pls use proper cards in the same size and a good crafty glue to stick the pictures. I had seen cards of flowers done by another mother but I cant even pronounce the words of these flowers! How to make it interesting for our kids!

      Enjoy your friday nights! :rahrah:

@weatherbee, we all want to do our best for our kids…if we dont help them, who will…

With DD1, we were too busy working. We didnt think much about how to "teach" her. So my regret is not giving DD1 a head start. Today I can see her struggling on her school work.

With DD2, we are very involved and motivated. Anyway in short, she has mega memory now so she picks up new things quite fast.

    • RE: Growing old

hello Peapot and Savoury Sweet, He is a Teochew man.

Preparing a meal in his family is a big deal. I can cook but for 50 people is a different story.

When I was invited to dinner at his place for the 1st time, 1 of his sisters told me not to stand at the sink for too long…I wasnt sure what she meant but I learned very fast…there were non stop of washing after the meal !

We also shared the same gynae. When the gynae asked me who introduced him to me, I told him the names of my few SILs, he went …"…7 sisters family? your husband number what?.." It was Hilarious…

    • RE: Growing old

Recently I have been asking myself "what happens when I grow old"…We work so hard everyday to provide better life for our children. At the end of the time, we have probably 10 yrs to really do the things we want…By then we will need to help take care of grandchildren too!

I married a man with a BIG family. HE has 7 sisters and 5 brothers. So plus my MIL, I have to deal with 13 women in his life. There are 22 kids in the family. My DD2 is the "baby" being the youngest.

My MIL is very understanding. She does not impose on any of us and she lives with 2 unmarried SILs (HIS’s sisters). Whenever we give her monthly allowance, she would say she is a rich old lady, dont need to give too much.

Her kitchen flooded once and the following week, a brother paid for a contractor to give their mum a new kitchen. When her fridge broke down, we got her a new fridge 2 days later. When she had an eye infection, the doctor at hospital was amazed to see 4 sons and 3 daughters accompanying an old lady for doc appointment; all squeezed into a small room. But the doctor didnt know there were 2 other sons and 4 daughters not there! A family gathering means 50 people cos some of the older kids have started dating.

On my side, my own mother had wanted to stay with my either brothers after their weddings, but I told my parents NEVER to impose on the young couples.

Today with 2 new SILs (from my brothers’ wives), we make an effort to eat dinner togther every Wed and 2X every month on weekend. Imagine having 2 new SILs actually help to bring my family closer. I actually cant wait till they have babies!

So I want to say having a closed-knit family is important! We women look beyond our differences or comparsion of our kids. We make an effort for family gatherings. CNY - we celebrate 15 days. No one dare to visit my MIL house because there are 22 kids. LOL. I am so glad we are a big family!
