      Hi.
My boy is interested in joining Infocomm Club or Robotics Club. However, he cannot find trials for these 2 clubs? Are they exclusively cater only to students who DSA through Infocomm and Robotics only? He DSA through STEM (Math and Science). Appreciate your advices and insights.

      Thanks.
If your child is dsa-ed via STEM, I think he will be automatically included into the club. Plus he cannot make his CCA selection too. For this year Y1, both clubs are combined into 1 club known as STEAM.

Hi, like to know if next yr sec1 parents bought the optional books? I’m thinking if I should buy math workbooks since they are listed as optional. Thanks

Depends on the teacher, but most likely you will need it. My girl’s teacher used it. Maybe you can wait first, see if the teacher use it

Thank you! Hmm I will wait then and let my child purchase from bookshop if needed.

    • RE: Secondary School Third Languages

Hi, we are considering German as 3rd language for our DS, and would like to find out if take up rate is low and hard to find partners for practising. It seems like German is only offered at Bishan centre. May I know usually what time the class will end? If you just follow what is taught and materials provided, is it sufficient?

Hi, we have kind of decided on these schools and order by preference. I have quoted the latest year COP for reference here. Would appreciate kind parents for your advices on our ordering cos we are a bit uncertain if we sure can enter any of the schools here. Can I say that DS will most likely enter Dunman High and the 5th & 6th school is safe enough as safety net? our DS T-score 255, HCL +3 and we are looking at IP courses.

      1. RI (259) - his dream school so he die die wants to try even though he know its almost impossible.
      2. HCI (257)
      3. ACSI (256) or Dunman High (255)
      4. Dunman (255) or ACSI (256)
      5. Catholic High (252)
      6. River Valley High (253)

we couldn't decide between ACSI and DHS ordering. Cos if DHS is in 3rd, I think we can get in but the father prefers ACSI which is nearer to us with direct bus.

RI no chance, HCI half chance, ACSI half chance, Dunman High high chance, CHS & RV safe.
If you think of the order of ACSI & Dunman, not only the distance, but the IP IB and the cultures are quite different, go visit the schools twice and make final decision, no regrets after enrolled.
NJC could be one of the choice.

      Thank you pengpeng & hazeline!
We didn’t consider IB initially so we are now looking at how different IB is from A levels. DS ruled out NJC because it doesn’t have CCA that he is interested in.

Regarding the 2 CCA policy, of which one is a uniformed group: the load on the students is equivalent to those taking 1 CCA from other schools. So that is not an issue.
      👍👍 Thank you!

Ask your son, between ACSI and Dunman High, which school he prefer.

Anyway, most likely he will get in Hwa Chong, unless this year HCI COP move up
He has no preference between the schools. He was abit shock that acsi requires a uniform CCA, Cos he prefers sports or clubs only.

HCI will be ideal :xedfingers: but we are mentally prepared for either acsi or DHS.

Hi, my child is eligible to for HMT and foreign language and he is keen to do both. We want to try for ACSI lP with 1 pt away from COP. Wish to find out if it will be too hard to cope esp when the school requires 2 CCA in Yr1-4?

Congratulations to you & your son, Tookies!
      :congrats:

DS took Japanese & HMT. He switched to take German as a private student for time Mgt purposes & still doing Yr 4 HMT.

In Year 3, only students fr the Express stream will sit for CL exams whilst those on the IB track were not expected to do CL as they’ll just complete one HMT exams in Year 4. IB students will in Year 5 & Year 6 expected to be exempted fr Chinese. Some boys dropped HMT, fearing difficulty in managing time for pushing up their core subjects. This is really a choice thing, as DS prefers to be relieved by Year 5/6 fr HMT or any CL, to focus at a later stage to score well for core IB subjects & projects. To me, it’s perspective, individual ability to manage & balance his plate. From my u’stang, MOE designed curriculum to prepare our future leaders to engage a growing China economy, so the curriculum & sch exams might be tougher than the actual national HMT exams. Students are ONLY required to get a pass to earn that HMT. DS is looking fwd to be free of doing chinese language in Yr 5/6 & syllabus B shld be a beeeze for him. He’s hoping to offer German.

Let yr child try them out if he’s keen. Let him make his decision & own it. Just guide him to pros & cons. If u see him struggle with 3rd language by 2nd year, he has the option to drop it. I wld suggest if he picks up HMT, he shld keep up in earning his HMT recognition. But he’ll be the best person to know how far he can get himself pushing the limits. However, with CCAs, it is a compulsory commitment owise he’ll not gain the extra points towards tertiary admission. I’ve previously shared at length my perspective on keeping the young fit with CCAs & they'll feel fresh & energetic to hit the books. All work & no play makes a dull chap. I believe CCAs helps them release emotions, release endorphins fr their brain & keep physically fit to boot. As for parents, I see it as a safe time & place (most CCA time are spent in sch & under supervision) in a constructive manner rather than having extra time on hand, holed up in room at home on screen activities. They won’t fight us coz it’s the school rqmts. 😉

DS had enjoyed balancing studies, 3rd language, HMT, IP/IB project work & 2 CCAs. It’s comforting to see how he grows to keeping discipline. If kids see it as an exciting new life going into Secondary school, then it shld be sth they can manage in stride.

Hope you consider letting him choose & own his time and interests in secondary school life.

Thank you for sharing!! Yes he is heavily involved in his school selection. It’s good to hear from personal experiences! 😄
